An idyllic, peaceful escape, beautifully thought out and within easy reach of Paris, boasting a wide range of imaginative activities for all ages

Huttopia Senonches is actually one of a number of sites that first came to Cool Camping’s attention when we were sloping around the outskirts of Paris visiting their well-located Versailles site. It was such a success that they decided to edge out of their suburban setting and begin a second campsite deep in the French forests of Senonches, an hour and a half west of the capital. Here nature and setting are at the fore, within a spacious encampment in France’s second-largest state-managed woodland. Near a swimming lake, and with a great deal of nature-related activity on hand, Paris may be within reach, yet motivation to visit it is in short supply.

Horse-riding, mountain-biking, and hiking are all facilitated, and fishing in the Étang de Badouleau, adjacent to the camp, is easy. The site is car-free and campervans are limited to pitches near the entrance, lending a wonderfully back-to-basics feel. As with all Huttopia destinations, though, the reality is far from basic.

The forethought injected into the site means you’ll not be rubbing sticks together for warmth nor searching out the ‘soft’ leaves. Brand-new, superbly equipped toilet- and wash-blocks are scattered around, and tent pitches are based in their own generous clearing, supplemented with a picnic table. There is a ready-made bivouac and BBQ meeting point, with arranged tables to sit at and socialise.

Activity-wise, nature trails and even treasure hunts can take you through the forest. In high season sport tournaments are arranged, and a weekday morning-club with art and nature-based play keeps children occupied. An evening programme for adults, including story-telling, outdoor cinema, live music, and board games make this a rather special break from the norm.

Huttopia has reserved itself a very secure pitch in the camping world and deserves to be congratulated at Senonches as much as anywhere else. This site illustrates that, while the brand has grown beyond a family concern, it still has the soul and the desire to explore new forms of hospitality. To them, we raise a glass of our finest French vino.

Trappeur tent
Camping with my family .
We've loved camping at Huttopia, Senonches in the Trappeur tents . The tents were perfectly equipped and really comfortable. The facilities on site were excellent, if I had to be picky, I think the restaurant menu could have a wider choice .

Camping Pitch with electricity
We had a great time camping here, with our own tent. There is a huge amount of space between pitches, so it didn't feel claustrophobic, even in peak season. Lovely to wake up to birdsong in the woods, canoe on the lake and swim in two pools. Our 6 year old loved the activities put on by the staff, and the table football in the games room (which I imagine would also be good shelter when it rains!). We didn't have any issues with ticks or mozzies. Looking forward to coming back!

Canadienne tent
We stayed in a safari tent on a lovely pitch next to the lake, the summer holiday activities are varied and well organise (all free), there is something for everyone plus two lovely pools and very reasonable bike hire so you can explore the beautiful Senonches Forest trails. Staff are multilingual and very helpful. The site is well laid out and felt peaceful and not too crowded even in August. Our tent was clean and the beds were comfortable, it felt spacious even for a family of 5. A few items were missing from the inventory when we arrived but this was rectified. The toilet and washing facilities were clean, only gripe (and reason for 4 stars) would be that there weren’t enough loos/showers for campers (a lot of the accommodation is cabins or wood and canvas tents with their own bathrooms). There were two loos for our section of safari tents and camping pitches, probably circa 20 pitches in total, one was out of order the whole time we were there. This was also the case with another toilet block on the other side of the site. Overall a great experience and we will definitely try Huttopia again but I would be inclined to go for one of the “camping” rather than “village” sites next time in the hope of more washing/toilet facilities (or just fork out the extra for a bathroom!).

Great place for camping with the family. Clean facilities and well organised. Staff are helpful and the food is very good with great pizzas available to bring back to our tent. We stayed in July and there were lots of activities for the kids, which was brilliant. The playground and pool were big hits. Really relaxing stay and would recommend.

Very nice campsite situated on the edge of the forest. The only big negative is the number of ticks and mosquitoes. I feel that the staff should do more to keep the grass short to make it harder for ticks to latch on as there are kids running around.

Nearby attractions
Reception has plenty of information. The town of Senonches is charming and appears to have dropped from the sky into the centre of the forest. There is an 11th-century castle and plenty of interesting architecture. Parc Régional du Perche is 450 acres (182 hectares) of natural and cultural heritage, with fortified manor houses, farmsteads, and villages. Cycling or walking is best for exploring the region. Chartres is 25 miles (40 km) away with a medieval old town and cathedral.
Food and drink
A bar and restaurant overlook the lake with outdoor seating. They serve grilled meats, pizza and fresh breads and pastries at breakfast time. Both Chartres and Senonches (see off site) have great restaurants to discover.
