Le Balcon de la Baie
Camping le Balcon de la Baie Le Verger 35 120 Saint Marcan
Quiet woodland camping with sea views over Mont Saint-Michel Bay.
For many-a-year, British holidaymakers have flocked across the English Channel to holiday in Brittany, and for those of us planning to spend our French vacation under canvas, there is no shortage of campsites to choose from. Few though can boast pitches that come complete with stunning sea views like this.
Nestled amongst woodland close to the Brittany-Normandy border lies Le Balcon de La Baie. This small, peaceful campsite promises a warm welcome and a picture-postcard setting with views over the beautiful Mont Saint-Michel Bay. The pitches are generously sized and broken up by shrubs and trees which gives you a bit more personal space, as well as offering some shade on a hot summer's day. The grounds are well maintained with pretty flower bushes, trees and plenty of grass, but not overly manicured Early risers will be rewarded with the intoxicating aroma of freshly baked croissants as the local baker arrives with his daily delivery of bread and pastries.
Facilities cover all the essentials and there's plenty of activities to keep the family entertained, with a playground for little ones, a games room, plus plenty of open green space for a game of badminton or petanque. Or you can while away the time relaxing around (or cooling off in as may well be the case) the heated swimming pool which is connected to a shallower, child-friendly paddling pool.
There's plenty to explore offsite too in this area rich in history. The iconic island commune of Mont St-Michel is 25 minutes in one direction while the ancient walled port city of Saint-Malo is a similar distance the other way. For a day at the beach the numerous sandy stretches of northern Brittany are close by, including the genteel resort of Dinard, a favourite haunt of British visitors since the nineteenth century.
As evening approaches we recommend you head back to camp, crack open a cold beer or pour yourself a Pernod, and enjoy the sun setting over the sparkling waters of the bay beyond.
The Owner Says
great for kids
We love this campsite! We visited in August with our 5 year old and 3 year old. They had a great time exploring, making friends and playing in the play park (ideal for smaller children). We made good use of the swimming pool and of the bakery van each morning (make sure you queue early to get a croissant!). The visiting food vans were handy if we didn't feel like cooking in the evening. It's a great area to explore, beaches are great and kids loved St Malo. There are big supermarkets nearby which is handy. The owners, Sylvie and Gaelle, gave it a friendly touch and gave us plenty of useful advice on the best beaches etc. Facilities were spotless. My only niggle was that our pitch was on a slight slope which meant everything (including the children in their beds) went sliding off to one side!! Other than that, it's a great campsite. Would thoroughly recommend.
Undoubtedly, the attraction of this site is the location. It has pitches that overlook the Bay of Mont-St-Michel (although not Mont-St-Michel itself) with sunset views to die for and its proximity to the island and St Malo make it a great place to explore Brittany. It's well-run, clean and peaceful. Make sure you ask for the camping field overlooking the bay, not the far less attractive lower field where the look and feel of the place is totally different.
The creperie down the road is a great place to wander down to on your first night after the ferry sprint.
Also, check out gnome cottage at the entrance. What the hell?
