A family friendly campsite in the gardens of a French château, limited to a few pitches so that space is guaranteed

A thousand years ago, the cling clang of armour and haughty laughter of French aristocracy reverberated from the walls of this picturesque little château. Its grey stones and romantic round tower were as attractive then as they are today – if these walls could talk.... Since its commission by William the Conqueror, Château Monfréville has housed all sorts, from the family of Walt Disney to the invading German soldiers during World War II. Today, this scenic abode offers accommodation to those who venture into its beautiful gardens. Here, in the most quintessentially French surroundings, a thoughtfully-run campsite provides the perfect family getaway.

From the second you arrive at Le Château de Monfréville the quaint rusticity of the place is overwhelming. Parked beside the leafy apple orchard you are met by the rumble of a vintage tractor, your transport around the chateau to the vehicle-free pitches beyond. Bobbling along in the wooden trailer, a spacious site is revealed, limited to just 25 tents so customers are guaranteed to never feel crowded. There is ample room for children to play, open spaces where Bert the donkey can graze, and a natural swimming pond perfect for an authentic camping dip!

The greenery of the château gardens are unmarred by sanitary blocks. Instead campers head into the cellars of the castle where immaculately kept ablutions are accompanied by power sockets, fridge freezers and a washing machine. Those who wish such luxury to continue can forego the tent to stay in one of the two gypsy caravans – small but well equipped, and furnished with an eye for detail. A double bed and bunk-bed allow space for up to four, while ample storage space, two gas hobs, tables, chairs and every kitchen utensil required mean all you’ll need to bring is your toothbrush.

Overlooking a stunning national park, Le Château de Monfréville is the perfect place to grab a bike (free-to-borrow onsite) and head into the trees, discovering migrating storks, hooting owls or gregarious bullfrogs that offer a dawn chorus each morning. A longer cycle ride also takes you to the coast, a 15 minute journey in the car. Here the historic sandy beaches of D-Day are backed by fascinating museums, while sites like the famous Bayeux Tapestry are also close at hand.

At its heart, however, it is not just the pleasant countryside and rich history of Normandy that make the site so special but the real thoughtfulness that goes into how it is run. Owners Zoe and Paul are attentive and welcoming, while their smallholding of animals and tiny onsite honesty shop reflect the easy-going, rural atmosphere of the site. Children can socialise with fellow campers, parents can relax beneath the shady trees and everyone can leave vowing to return the following year.

Camp Monfreville is good old fashioned camping at its best! Great pitches, fabulous views with just the great outdoors & nothing added. There are no cars allowed on the campsite so that there is a true outdoor feeling with nature & children can roam freely playing with the animals and new found friends. Cars are parked up in at the entrance. July & August mornings see The Bread Fairy delivering delicious croissants, pain au chocolats and baguettes to your camping. Three evenings each week are a cracking social event with home cooked meal served.  There is an honesty shop  with charcoal, wood, marshmallows & all the little essentials you may need along with a washing machine. Enjoy our swimming pool after a day of exploring Normandy or play ping pong or go for a bike ride or just sit back & relax. We love camp fires. You can either bring your own or we have fire pits which you can help yourself too. Hot showers, loos and a wash up area are situated in the cellars of the chateau. There are fridges &  freezers available. Free WIFI and charging points. We have a maximum of 25 tents at any one time. We absolutely promise to never be overcrowded. A tourist tax is requested at the end of the stay. This tax helps the tourism office to maintain the beauty of our beaches, our streets, our towns and public buildings (0,20 cents per adult per night).

Lovely stay in the castle garden. It is quiet, there is plenty of space for each tent, beautiful views of the Normandie countryside. There is also a lovely swimming pool that invites for quiet relaxing. The bathrooms and other amenities are excellent, best bread delivered at the site. We will definitely come back.

The magic of this charming campsite is irresistible. It feels like a hidden retreat full of like-minded people. The wine tasting, BBQ and chicken night brought people together. The setting is truly gorgeous, oozing in history and beauty. My children will never forget the tractor ride! Thank you! Already planning a return visit with friends!

Chateau de Monfreville Camping
Lovely spacious, peaceful & classy campsite. No cars near pitches mean even young kids are safe to roam freely. Hosts are friendly, helpful and well organised. Facilities are always clean. Bakery delivery, meal nights and a very pleasant pool made our stay even more special. All in all, a very relaxing and very cool campsite.

From the host
Family-run boutique camping in the grounds of a magical castle, idyllically set in the heart of the Normandy countryside. Perrine and Thibault warmly welcome guests of all ages for a truly unique holiday. We love running our little camp site in the heart of the Normandy country side. The best part of it, is all the people who come to stay and especially the ones who come again and again. If we had to descibe what makes this a special spot, it would have to be the total ambience of nature and history combined together. The site overlooks The Cotentin & Bessin national park which is home to storks, herons, kingfishers and many other birds whilst the chateau has a baffling history dating back to William the Conqueror. With a 'No Car' and no caravans/ campers policy on the site, this makes a super happy relaxed atmosphere, with kids running freely and parents relaxing without the worry. The swimming pool is a highlight. The idea of camping brings to mind the caption of, The Great Unwashed', which can bring chills to some at the thought of not having a proper shower and generally being rather dirty by the end of a camping trip. This couldn't be further from the truth when camping at Chateau Monfreville. Because we like our little creature comforts when camping, we decided to put in showers and loos that we would want! So, in the cellars of the chateau, are the most gorgeously decorated Men's and Ladies that one could ask for. Hot showers, no meters, power points for hairdryers, mobile phones & cameras. Theres even a sofa or 2 to pop yourself down, should there be a queue. The wash up sinks, bins, recycle, 2 big fridges; microwave are also in the cellars of the chateau. We really hope that we have thought of everything.
Nearby attractions

Le Château de Monfréville, though a small château by French standards, makes up for it with extensive gardens and a prime position overlooking the Regional Nature Park of Cotentin and Bessin (0033 233 716 190). It is centrally located for Utah and Omaha Beach (20 minutes drive), with fascinating museums and miles of sandy beaches. Utah Beach Museum (+33 233 719 236), the Omaha Beach Memorial Museum (+33 231 219 744) and the Bayeux War Cemetery are perhaps the most poignant of insights into D-Day and the Second World War. The charming medieval town of Bayeux is home to the famous 11th-century tapestry, listed as a “Memory of the World” by UNESCO. Mont St Michel (0033 233 601 430) is an hour's drive, as is Giverny, the home of Monet's Gardens (0033 232 512 821). There's a cheese factory (0033 231 513 333) and (separate) caramel factory (0033 231 516 650) in the local town of Isigny, while the local tourist office here is also a decent starting point to discovering the area.

Food and drink

Due to Covid 19 our swim pool will be open but might be restricting (will depend of government policy). We will offer the opportunity to buy take away food and bread and pastries will be available every day of the week. . The great restaurants of Isigny (4km)  Bar Central & Crêperie (0033 231 510 960). Similarly, the traditional fishing village of Grandcamp Maisey, boasts A La Maree (0033 231 214 100), La Tinquettte (0033 231 226 490) and La Belle Marinière (0033 231 226 123), all excellent.
