Rural camping in the Midi-Pyrénées, surrounded by sunflower fields and an easy drive from historic French towns
A healthy tan, a nice dose of vitamin-D – there’s much to be said for sun-seeking. And if you’re one who needs an excuse, just look to nature. It’s a part of our natural evolution. Like a field of sunflowers in the Midi-Pyrénées turning from east to west as the day goes on. Or like the leaves of the fig trees tilting in the afternoon light as they bring themselves to fruit. As the hippies would say, “it’s all natural man. It’s all natural”. So while during the winter months Country Camping may close the gates for a little shut-eye, come the beginning of April campers seem born to trickle back again – human sunflowers coming down from the north to catch those revitalising rays.

Nonetheless, that the Midi-Pyrénées is often dubbed “Toulouse and the Midi-Pyrénéan Desert” is something of a misnomer – a reference not to the heat but to the relative absence of activity in these parts compared to the bustling city an hour's drive away. There’s a definite rural feel, a landscape that is home to more farms than any other region in France. And it’s this quiet rusticity, this peaceful countryside charm and pastoral joie de vivre vibe that Country Camping is very much a part of.

In springtime, catch the last of the colourful blossoms as they’re replaced by cherries dangling appetisingly from the trees. In autumn, it’s the peaches, like soft, velvety fists, ripe for the picking. Whenever you come, the shady trees that enclose the 20 grassy pitches provide a natural, green feel that’s in keeping with the pastoral French surroundings. The best spots are actually those with the slightly lower hedges, the gaps revealing views across the neighbouring field and partially wooded valley.

Those looking for a little more luxury can try one of the three, fully furnished safari tents onsite or the wooden bijou chalet. Yet the real comfort of this campsite is the easygoing atmosphere it affords. A small outdoor swimming pool sloshes around under the energy of younger campers, overlooked by the chilled-out bar terrace where quieter kids are setting about a nerve racking game of giant outdoor jenga. After that try the neighbouring stretch of woodland, somewhere to build dens and search for dragons and gruffalos – though the ones around here are French speaking, so kids may have to brush up on their vocab before any unexpected encounters.

In all it’s these simple pleasures that make Country Camping such a great campsite, independently of the pleasant attractions nearby. It’s an easy cycle to the old military village of Saint Ybars, while a drive to the spectacular natural park Pyrénées Ariégeoises provides an endless list of outdoor activities to try. But while these exploratory day-trips reveal the place to be anything but a desert there’s something just as charming about a lazy afternoon back at base, frolicking in the pool and enjoying the ever present necessity of the sun.

All pitches have electrical hook-ups available. There are 3 large, 2-bedroom safari tents. Each have a living kitchen area with a gas hob and refrigerator, a shaded veranda and can accommodate up to 5 people. Bed linen and cooking utensils are provided. There are 2 shower and toilet buildings, washing-up facilities, a disabled shower and toilet and a washing machine (€6 per wash). The campsite has a swimming pool with decked sun terrace, boules court, bar and terrace, BBQ area, volleyball court, children’s playground with outdoor table tennis and Tarzan rope swings. Wi-Fi is available.
The Pool will be open from 16th July till 31st August.

Suitable For

Tents, caravans, campervans, trailer-tents, dogs – yes.

The region has a host of interesting cities, towns and villages to visit, lively and beautiful Toulouse (1hr drive) and historic Foix (50mins drive) overlooked by an ancient castle (0033 5 34 09 83 83) are amongst them. Closer at hand the nearby fortress villages such as Saint Ybars (10mins away) and Carla-Bayle (25mins away) are also worth a visit. Take the family White-water canoeing on the Garonne, challenge yourself to climb the areal walkways of Sequoya adventure park (0033 5 61 68 51 51) or try horse riding through the local countryside. For the best of it head to Parc Naturel Régional des Pyrénées Ariégeoises (0033 5 61 02 71 69) a half hours drive away and the most scenic spot for outdoor pursuits and wildlife watching.

Food & Drink

Country Camping has a cheerful bar that provides a variety of drinks. On Saturday's they provide a BBQ held on the terrace overlooking the swimming pool where campers can enjoy a selection of meats and fish. Thursday is pizza night cooked in their outdoor wood fired pizza oven and Tuesday sees a freshly prepared 3-course repas, usually served in the bar or under the sun shades outside. Elsewhere there are nearby markets in Auterive and Carla-Bayle, the best places to go for fresh local goods.
Unfortunately there will be no food served in 2022.

Away from it all but with added benefits!

What an amazing site. I don't really want to tell you about it. Because if I do, you'll know about it too, then your friends will...... :o) In these days of increasingly larger, more over commercialized sites (which cost a fortune), to find such a hidden gem is fantastic. As campers all our lives (so over 100 year experience between us!), my husband and I truly rate Country Camping as one of the best sites we have ever been on. There are variety of mostly grassy pitches - large and spacious, some shaded in a lovely wooded area, others in sun, but with hedges for privacy and trees for welcome shade in the heat of the day. Electricity and water close to hand on all. Cars are parked separately making the whole site much safer for younger children, and quieter for all. The pool is kept immaculately clean and well maintained, is warm after many hot days but cooled down with frequent top ups, a delightful respite from searing midday temperatures in August - plenty of umbrellas and loungers. There is a quiet bar and indoor games room, an occasional film for the kids in the evening, volleyball and boules pitch, two simple but spotlessly clean shower blocks in the two main areas of the site. But don't let these facilities make you this think that the place is crowded - it feels very personal and you can go all day and only see a few folk. The views across to the Pyrennes are breathtaking. It's in a very rural and peaceful area, but a short drive will take you to market towns with facilities, or up in to the mountains for exploring. Toulouse and Foix are both less than an hour away, spectacular Cathar castles within striking distance for daytrips or a bit of culture. If you can be bothered to stir yourselves from the relaxing routine you can get into at the site that is! There is a limited access to internet/wifi but don't count on that - to be honest, it was an utter relief to be without.... However, the very best aspect of this site has to be its English owners. Without doubt they have the balance just right - friendly, helpful, fun, taking time for a chat, or a late night glass of wine (whilst the kids are never too far away), but never intruding. They do a bread run six days a week - traditional and simple pain/croissants etc but very welcome as it means you really can stay all day without having to go out! They put on several themed evening "meals" every week - pizzas (famous - and delicious - wood oven cooked from scratch), fajitas, "junk food" night, cocktails and fancy ice creams for the little ones, and a splendid feast of a barbecue with prawns, chicken, ribs, kebabs, sausages, salads - LOTS of salads and "cuisse de grenouille" so the kids can squeal! These turn out to be gentle but very social, family occasions - no pressure to join in - but we would really recommend - great value and thoroughly enjoyable. Several families we met whilst we were there for 10 days, had decided to extend their stays as they and their children were having such a great time. If only we had been able to do the same! And finally, if you haven't got your own kit, or want an easier time of a camping break - Country Camping has some Ready Camp options - Bell tents, Safari tents and a few mobile homes. With cheap flights down to Toulouse or Carcassone a long weekend really is a tempting option! Thank you John and Bernie - and all the gang. We would love to come back again. And might just do one of those long weekends......

Absolutely amazing!

We have just came back from the most amazing 2 weeks at this beautiful well kept sight ran by the most amazing family. We stayed in the chalet next to the pool which is a converted sauna house which has been transformed into somthing truly amazing it was very spacious and backed onto the most beautiful sights including the gourgous sun set and it really did exeided our expectations beyond belief. This is the second time we have stayed here and it most certainly will not be our last. We have a son who is 8 years old and he had the time of his life here. He was able to run free make friends and also had the pleasure of having his 8th birthday here, which the owners went above and beyond to make his day extra special. Somthing that will stay with us for ever. The sight is located near many attractions that suit both adults and children. It's always well kept clean and such a relaxed atmosphere. The food nights are one of a kind with the family spending many hours to produce the most tasty meals Bringing all campers together to enjoy the fantastic atmosphere. I would highly recommend this sight to all walks of life from couples to family's of all ages. Greatful for the time we spent here, the friends we made and memory's that will last a life time. Hope to see you all again very soon! The Smith family.

Best pitch during out three weeks of camping

We've been all over Europe, from Germany in the north to Spain in the south. This place was the best, we went off-season (mid June) but the hosts (a really lovely family) did everything they could and more to make the visit as pleasant as possible. The pool was super nice during the ultra hot days (35+) and we're looking forward to our next stay.

Great shady pitch in family friendly site

Very friendly campsite. Brilliant for kids as cars not allowed around site so they could have freedom to roam around. We really enjoyed the food nights- especially the barbecue. Staff were really friendly and even gave us a tow back up the hill! We will be back!

Fantastic stay

One of our favourite campsites. The facilities are excellent and the owners cannot do enough to make your stay as pleasant as possible. Their organised evening activities were fantastic and the bar, a particular selling point. Great site for families. Can't wait to return

Family Camping with Young Children

We stayed at Country Camping for two weeks at the end of July with our two young children (5 and 3). We found the family welcoming and helpful without being intrusive and the site to be perfect for our needs. Easy to find and with pleasant views across the Midi-Pyrenees, we alternated between days out (from which we found this to be a good base) and days spent around the campsite. Good shower and toilet facilities, a good and well maintained play area for the kids and wonderful and spacious pool. Organised activities in the evening (volleyball/treasure hunt) are great fun and good for socialising with fellow campers. Also, if you plan your days out to be coming back to one of the popular burger/pizza or BBQ nights, it does give you a break from rattling out the pots and pans. The freedom you are able to afford your children in this safe and friendly environment as well as the daily bread order, well stocked family bar and large pitches all add to the experience. We can only sing its praises and would heartily recommend.

Amazing Stay

We spent a fantastic two weeks here with our 10 year old daughter. Easy to find and drive to from Zeebrugge with one stopover. We were given a tour of the site and a choice of pitches for our tent. There are fully equipped safari tents and bell tents to rent as well if you want to fly. Beautiful countryside with rolling hills and sunflower fields. The family are extremely welcoming and helpful. We hardly saw our daughter! The site is geared up to be very sociable if you want that, or you can keep to yourselves. We enjoyed the evening activities - BBQ was fantastic, pizza night and 'junk food' night, all washed down with either wine, sangria, gin, cocktails and ice cream sundaes for the kids. Films are put on in the bar area for kids to watch so parents can socialise and play games. Facilities were spotless. Good shower block and toilets. The area has a lot to offer. Toulouse is only 40 minutes away with the Space Museum to visit. Beautiful Lakes and Rivers for swimming and picnics. Medieval towns such as Foix and Carcassone well worth a visit. Andorra, with tax free shopping is a good day out, or a trip to the Pyrenees. Nice, quiet site but enough to be social. Short drive to nearest towns with markets and supermarkets. We felt totally relaxed after our holiday and will definately be back with our extended family.

Great Site

I never realised this campsite was on Cool Camping! I stayed there last summer (July 2015) really nice place. The owners are super friendly and it's not too busy. Nice quiet campsite.

Wonderful time

We spent a lovely week at this site with our two young boys. The owners could not have made us feel more welcome. The facilities are excellent and the children had many fun days splashing about in the pool. The communal cooking events were a really nice touch where you got to meet other families and learn about things to do and places to see.  The Bijou Chalet was just perfect set in beautiful shade with great cooking facilities and comfortable sleeping. This region has lots to offer in terms of caves, walking and spectacular countryside.

An excellent campsite, just perfect!

We stayed for two weeks at Country Camping and it's just fantastic. My wife and I and both our children (aged 12 & 10) stayed there for two weeks and originally planned various excursions. However, we all had so much fun that almost every day we spent by the pool with other families.

The children from all families got on very well together and the place is so safe and secure that we felt very happy leaving them to discover different parts of the campsite, knowing that they couldn't run into trouble or harm.

The staff are all very kind and friendly, always making sure that guests are happy with everything. They put on various small events (volleyball, BBQ night, Pizza night, Bonfire night) and all are optional to attend and always great fun.

We stayed in one of the African Safari Tents. They're large enough to land a small aircraft inside and the beds are so comfortable. There is plenty of power sockets in the tent and lots of room for the whole family. Highly recommended!

The toilets are very clean and the showers are warm & powerful.

Talking to other families while we were there everyone (without exception) was very happy with the campsite. Many had extended their stay to enjoy a longer time at the campsite.

Highly recommended.

Comfortable and Friendly

We had a fantastic and too short stay during July in a safari tent.  Having never stayed in this type of accommodation before, we were not too sure what to expect and had used Country Camping as a stepping stone before we travelled to our gite.  Oh dear, what a mistake!  The bar was set very high with the accommodation being very comfortable and spacious and the general feel of the site super friendly.  We had a fantastic time and were so sad to leave.  There was a great community feel with pizza night and we also enjoyed the volleyball.  Activities are organised which you can dip in or out of; no pressure.  The kids (and teenagers!) have a great sense of freedom with the swimming pool, pool table, table tennis etc and if the weather isn't fantastic, films are projected on the giant screen.  The owners go above and beyond to make sure everybody is happy and catered for.  Absolutely loved it and hoping to go back with friends next year.  Big thanks to Yolande and Damian....

Great place to stay!

It's not only the beautiful landscape with a marvellous view of the Pyrenees, not just the remoteness and peaceful tranquillity, the well kept facilities, no, more than everything else you should come and stay because of the warm welcome of a lovely family, who really love what they do! Customer is always first! And you can see that in many small details as toilet paper, dishwashing liquid etc., which are still not standard everywhere. Your kids will find many toys at the pool. Or they go on discovery in the little forest at the bottom of the valley on the foot of the site... And whatever you need, Yolanda and Damian will be happy to give you an help and assistance needed! Great too for overnight stays on the way to Spain!

Gezellige familiecamping

Superb Facilities

looking forward to visiting again in July 2015 after a wonderful visit in 2014.

It is a peaceful campsite with lots to keep our 4 year old son entertained. We stopped in the African Safari tents which were ideal in the height of the French summer. A great base for visiting Carcassonne, Toulouse and Castelnaudary (great for authentic cassoulet).

Always felt we could relax while our son made friends and had fun. Lots of activities organised for the kids too.

What a fantastic place. A lovely family run campsite, situated within beautiful surroundings. Whether you just want to sit by the pool and relax or go exploring, there is plenty to do. Activities for the children are often organised and very well led.

Clean and fresh facilities.

Idyllic setting

Country camping is a warm friendly family run site. It is a peaceful campsite with lots of beautiful countryside to explore. As a mum of 3 year old twins for us it's the perfect spot to have a fun family holiday where we feel the children are safe to play while we relax. We are always made welcome on our visits.

Rustige,mooie camping
