Family-friendly camping near the waters of Lac de Maine and within easy cycling distance of Angers' medieval city centre

Angers may just be the perfect place for an urban camping holiday. Nicknamed ‘the Green City’, on account of its countless parks and green spaces and set around the confluence of river after river after river. It is perhaps the only city that can offer such urban vibrancy alongside lakes, islands, nature parks and protected wildlife zones. And the biggest of these parks – found by crossing the bridge from Angers’ famously grand château and strolling a few minutes south into the Belle-Beille district – is the park of Lac de Maine. It’s here that you’ll find the setting for your almost-urban adventure.

Set in the southwest corner of the 300-acre park, Camping d’Angers has recently been taken over and rejuvenated by the Huttopia group, a conscientious brand with campsites across France where a natural feel is as important as family-friendly facilities. Mature trees populate Camping d’Angers and more have just been planted, while the hundred-odd pitches all have access to a newly refurbished wash-block and heaps of outdoor activity options, including a swimming pool, playground, table tennis tables and a volleyball court.

Cyclists are particularly in their element. The campsite is on a number of popular routes, many of which meet in and around Angers as they follow the course of the various rivers. The Loir, the Sarthe, the Mayenne, the Maine and the Loire all converge within 10km of Angers city centre and the campsite provides bike storage and basic repair equipment for those in need. For everyone else, meanwhile, you can also hire bikes from reception for a pedal around the lake or to cycle your way into town. Between the gothic cathedral (built between the 11th and 16th centuries and a national monument of France) and the massive riverside château that is home to the biggest medieval tapestry ensemble in the world, there are plenty of key attractions to tick off the holiday bucket list. Beyond, meanwhile, lies the UNESCO recognised reaches of the Loire Valley, the rolling vineyards of the region and the countless more château that this part of the world offers at every turn.

Fully renovated shower blocks, laundry (coin operated), motorhome service point, heated swimming pool, hot tub, playground, table tennis, volley ball court, pétanque court, basketball court, giant chess board, table football, free Wi-Fi (around reception), TV area and common room with books and games to borrow. BBQs and fridges are available for hire. Tourist information in reception and a programme of activities on-site during the school summer holidays.

Suitable For

Tents, campervans, motorhomes, caravans, families, groups, couples, pets… everyone!

It's 1km to the nearest supermarket, petrol station, bakery, bank and so on, and 5km into the very heart of the old town centre from the campsite. There's a bus stop 300m from the campsite that takes you (via bus number 6) into the centre in 25 minutes and there are also cycle paths right from the campsite entrance (bikes available to hire) that take you into town through a beautiful 250-acre park. In fact, the whole cycle path is a delight, stick with it to enjoy not only the old town of Angers, but also old slate quarries and the banks of the River Maine, which can be followed far beyond the city. The campsite borders Lac de Maine, where swimming is permitted (lifeguards through summer), while kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding and sailing are all options too. You can also join regular nature walks – the lake is a protected bird reserve with a total of nearly 235 species recorded. Finally, in Angers itself, the cathedral (0033 2 4187 5845), the riverside château (0033 2 4186 4877), the Musée des Beaux-Arts (0033 2 4105 3800) and the Museum of Natural Science (0033 2 4105 4850) are the main attractions, but you can spend hours simply exploring the city's nooks and crannies. Start with a visit to the tourist information centre if you want to get your bearings.

Food & Drink

An on-site snack wagon opens all day during July and August (drinks, homemade pizzas, salads, snacks and more) with an outdoor terrace overlooking the swimming pool. You can also take away. Fresh bread and pastries are available to order each day (place your order the evening before). Head into Angers centre for endless more options. Bistrot des Ducs (0033 2 4186 8868) on Rue des Deux Haies is a particularly good, independently run eatery for genuinely French cuisine. For something super casual, pizzas from humble-looking Le Napoli (0033 2 4187 6809) on Rue Toussaint are also a guilty pleasure.

Very enjoyable stay- would happily return!

Great site with lovely facilities and a super location a short walk/ bike ride from the lake. We stayed in the Evasion chalet, simple but very functional and practically kitted out. Very grateful for the fridge freezer given the hot weather endured! Remember to bring hand soap, extra loo roll, extra bin bags plus all the basics (salt, oil, tea, coffee, sugar ) for the kitchen. Staff were very helpful also very conscientious and mindful with the covid precautions. The bakery order the day before for the following morning, worked very well and the pastries delicious. We also ate very well from the grill. The pool and playground were fab for the kids. Very much enjoyed the bikes hired (hire available by the day or half day at an extra charge subject to availability) and the cycle to Angers is highly recommended.

Wonderful location for city camping

Very friendly staff (thanks for the suggestion of ‘Chez Pont Pont’ for dinner!), now part of the Huttopia group so you know you’re getting a good standard. Recently renovated so new facilities and a great spot straight onto the extensive cycle tracks. Not quite as clean as I’d have expected given how often it should be cleaned, but that doesn’t detract from the quality of the place. I suppose it did feel a little soulless in a way, but many sites do in September. They’re all still quite busy so I don’t really see why the bar and restaurant are open only for 2 months as they’re such a central and huge feature of the place! They could at least open reduced hours or areas rather than full closure. Still a lovely site though.

Clean, well run - a bit lacking in soul.

Really well run, very clean and well organised with lovely staff. Close to lots of great things to do like the Chateau Angers and Terra Botanica. Only draw back is it is perhaps the least characterful Cool Camping site we have been too. Less Cool Camping ad more Efficient Camping in feel.

One of the best if not the best camping sites we ever stayed in

Ideal for bike enthusiasts lots and lots of biking trucks very well kept leading to beautiful little villages along the river Maine or directly to beautiful town of Angers . Many other thinks to do , to many to be enumerated here. Lovely food coffee and nice people. We definitely recommend it

Lovely week

Just back from 6 days here! Had a great time, not our usual choice of a campsite location, we normally go for middle of nowhere! This was great tho, nice and quiet and in a lovely area despite being so close to the city! Lovely clean pool, and playpark etc, all very new and clean feeling! Nice to borrow games etc and play badminton etc. Facilities clean, tho not all showers open despite campsite being full and it being high season? Only had to wait for shower once tho so was generally ok. The lakes nice, 10 min walk, but there’s nice swimming area, loos etc. We hired canoes on the lake’s not that big...2 hours is probably long enough! Helpful staff tho. Nice to walk round it too, and see the beavers. Few things... We booked a large pitch but the one we were allocated wasn’t big enough for our tent! Thankfully they moved us to another- much bigger - I’ve no idea why they allocated such a small one- definitely ask if you don’t get one you’re happy with! They offer bbq rental but there are only 2 for the whole site so make sure you book it early if you want one or take your own. They offer bike rental but have very few there, we failed to get them twice. You can book them the night before but the staff failed to tell me that when I asked and instead told me it was first come first served in the morning...I wasn’t v happy after setting my alarm early to find that wasn’t the case! You have to book your bread for the next day by 8pm the day prepared to wait a while in the morning to collect’s quite slow while they serve the breakfast coffees etc at the same time. If you’ve got kids there’s a fun leisure park at brissac that’s worth spending a day at. I wouldn’t go back, we like exploring new places, but we did have a fun time there and all facilities v nice, staff friendly etc, pizza good 🙂

Clean, friendly quiet campsite with really good facilities near to Angers and the Velo á Loire

We were using a small tent but had a generously sized pitch with water and electricity. The trees had suffered a bit from the long hot summer but there was still adequate shade. Clean unisex shower block; sparkling swimming pool which was well chlorinated; a small shop stocking some basics. Friendly staff on reception. We didn’t use the restaurant but it looked good. Nearby (about ten minutes by bike) was a great boulangerie and a large supermarket. We had bikes and enjoyed the accessible cycling on the Velo a Loire cycle route which offered Beautiful cycling beside the river on level ground. (Eg to Béhuard an atmospheric old island town now a UNESCO site) Would happily stay again. The only disappointment was no swimming in the rivers (dangerous!). The lake was a nature conservation area with bird watching ... and with some swimming at the baignade.

Wish we'd stayed longer!

We stayed at three different Huttopia sites throughout our two week trip in mid July and their theme runs successfully throughout all the sites we stayed at. Exceptionally clean and well looked after, great service and good food are at the core of all the sites. Pros: Angers is lovely! The sites electric bikes are a fun way to get around. A recently renovated site with great facilities, pool area and bar Cabins are clean and spacious Cons: 5 minute walk to the nearest point of the lake, no lake access on site Pool area gets very busy even in mid July I really can't recommend Angers enough with historic sites, great cycle routes and funky city streets to wander around. As I said the lakes nearest point is 5 minutes away by foot, especially if you're carrying SUPs like I was, but once there you're clear to enter the water and explore freely (I walked straight to the waters edge from the path, opting not to walk around to the main centre) The site is extremely clean, has a great vibe and many brand new facilities. The staff were all extremely friendly and knowledgable and the food runs along the same lines as all the other Huttopia sites, being very tasty, healthy and served quickly. I'd certainly return here as Angers has so much to see and do. I'd highly recommend the electric bike hire to cover ground quickly and explore as much as you can. *follow your SatNav but signs are for City Kamp not Huttopia*
