Easy glamping with dogs allowed in the foothills of the Massif des Monédières in Corrèze

There’s a catchy French pop song with lyrics that ask the question: “How can I forget this corner of paradise?” Is it talking of the Dordogne, the Loire Valley or the French Riviera? No — it’s talking of Corrèze. The area that neighbours the Dordogne seems to occupy a special place in the hearts of its countrymen but — to us Brits at least — is infinitely less well known. And therein lies part of its charm. It’s quiet but dramatic countryside; full of lakes and forested peaks. To stay among them, in this little corner of paradise, head for the glamping tents of Le Ranch.

It was sitting atop one of those peaks that Brits Mike and Hayley decided to take the plunge and buy the plot of land that became Le Ranch Camping. Now, a few years later, their site has come of age. Four glamping bell tents and a couple of camping pitches occupy a meadow out back of their house, on the edge of the tiny village of Madranges.

There’s a lotus bell tent, a yurt and two safari tents with hot tubs (or cold plunge pools for when the temperatures hit the highs). Each is decked out for family stays, though not too big for couples. The beds are made, there’s electric hook-up and there’s a covered kitchen outside with outdoor seating. Elsewhere on-site, you’ll find table tennis, a small over-ground pool and a little honesty shop with coffee and ice cream for sale. This is France, of course, so morning bread and croissant deliveries are a staple and, at the other end of the day, you can eat from the small on-site pizzeria.

It’s a handy service Hayley has introduced, as there’s no place to eat out in Madranges. This is the foothills of the Massif des Monédières and, in fact, the only thing you can reach on foot or by bike is the great outdoors; there’s plenty of that to see with 30 peaks stretching up to 900 metres. You can walk to the outlook that clinched the deal for Mike and Hayley, Puy du Suc au May, in an hour and 40 minutes or drive 10km to the closest lake for swimming. Lac Baroiusses, is one of many in the region with supervised swimming in summer and paddleboards, kayaks and pedalos for hire. Nearby Treignac will fulfill any shopping needs and is a lovely place for coffee, people watching and meandering among medieval buildings.

The four glamping tents share the field with two pitches for people with their own tents, campervans or caravans. Facilities are shared between campers and glampers and include two showers, three toilets and four washbasins in a spotlessly-clean facilities building. There are also two washing-up sinks. Each glamping tent has electric hook-up and is furnished with made-up beds (a double and single sofa beds in the yurt and lotus bell tent, with a double and bunk beds in the safari tents). Outside each tent has its own seating, a picnic bench and a covered summer kitchen with fridge, gas oven and hob. The safari tents also have a private wood-heated hot tub each which can be used as a mini plunge pool in hot weather. There's a communal seating area with lounge furniture under a pergola and coffees and ice creams are available from the on-site honesty shop. There's a table tennis table, an over-ground five-metre swimming pool and a small on-site (but out of the camping field) licensed pizzeria.

Suitable For

Glampers, campers, families, couples, dogs (in the yurt and safari tents) – yes. Dogs in the lotus bell tent – no.

The site is an ideal base from which to go hiking or cycling with the Monédières massif nearby. Hayley and Mike recommend visiting the massif’s second-highest point, the Puy du Suc au May, which is a walk of just over 90 minutes from the site. It offers superb views of the Monédières and the Auvergne mountains. The site is also at the foot of two launch points for paragliding and a local company, Libre comme l'air (+ 33(0)6 50 42 76 59), offers tandem flights just minutes from the campsite. The medieval town of Treignac is just 10 kilometres from site and a nice place for a wander and to visit its shops and eateries. Just north of it is the nearest lake to the campsite, Lac Baroiusses, where there's a sandy beach and opportunities for swimming and fishing all year and for canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding and more during the summer from Station Sports Nature (+33(0)5 55 98 0093) on the lakeshore. Other nearby swimming lakes are Lac de Bournazel at Seilhac, 17km from site, and the smaller and more tranquil lake at Chaumeil, about 10km away. Both have supervised swimming for July and August only.

Food & Drink

There's an honesty shop with a few basics for sale on-site and a bread delivery service for those all-important croissants is available every day except Thursday and Mike and Hayley run a small pizzeria that's licensed to sell beer and wine. Mike and Hayley's neighbour Stéphane as a craft brewer and her Brasserie des Anges (brewery) is based in Chamboulive, around 11km from site, with a bar which opens on Fridays from 6pm. For a meal out, head to Treignac (10km from site) where there are a couple of local brasseries, a creperie and a fine-dining restaurant. If you're spending the day at the lake, head to Cote Ti Plage restaurant and bar (open May-September). Ask on site about local markets or head to Brive-la-Gaillarde (45km away) and the famous Georges Brassen food market, open on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning.
