Moulin de la Geneste
Moulin de la Geneste, 19140 Condat sur Ganaveix, Correze, Limousin, France
Uzerche isn't known as 'the pearl of the Limousin' for nothing. It’s cluster of ancient, turreted buildings, clambering up towards the steeple of its hilltop church, creates one of the most scenic townscapes in all of France, while the languid pace of the river Vézère imbues a sense of calm and serenity across the entire settlement. Slithering around the town in a tight loop, it’s as if the river has squeezed the old centre upwards, the grey-stone buildings crowning the surrounding valley with their spikey rooftops and rows of classical arches.
Were you to climb the church tower and peer from the narrow windows, it would be a struggle to pick out the neighbouring village of Condat sur Ganaveix. Though just six kilometers away, the flanks of trees and numerous shallow valleys disguise it among the countryside, but it’s on the edge of the village, nestled among such lush surroundings, that Camping Moulin de la Geneste is found.
Spread across 10 acres but with only around 45 camping pitches, Moulin de la Geneste is a country campsite as naturally suited to its surroundings as the birds in the trees and the trout in the river. Much of the site is made up of unmanaged pockets of woodland and long grasses, while three specific camping areas provide space where tents can be pitched or motorhomes parked up for the night. The attitude is pretty relaxed. Events are suitably spontaneous and homemade – be it floating candles on the lake, a treasure hunt, story telling in the fairy garden or feeding and brushing ponies – but there are plenty of happy constants to keep you busy through the day. Boules and basketball courts entertain in the warm summer evenings, while managed footpaths lead you through the trees by day, to quiet picnic areas and streams perfect for kids to dabble and splash about during the midday heat.
When you do head elsewhere, though, there is plenty to do. Uzerche itself has a wealth of important heritage – the central abbey is a sign of its pinnacle of influence during the 1100s and the surrounding fort-shaped buildings that were a style of the time have led to the French saying “He who owns a house in Uzerche has a castle in the Limousin”. It’s not a place of fast-paced, fist-pumping modern life, of course, (though join the local canoe outfitters and you’ll certainly find some speed on the downstream rapids) but for a little casual exploration there are few better spots – it’s as if the town were tailor made for aimless ambling.
When you slide your rook across the chessboard back at Camping Moulin you can’t help but feel the timelessness of the whole area: The beautiful Limousin, its mature woodlands and ancient settlements, and the age-old beauty of camping out beneath the stars. “Beware”, their website warns, “You may find yourself staying longer than you planned”. It’s not a counsel to be taken lightly.

Wonderful campsite in a beautiful setting and made to feel so welcome by Steve, Sharron and Harvey. The kids loved exploring the hidden paths and woodland, and spending time with the animals, particularly the horses. We would recommend this campsite to anyone and we will definitely be back!
Above and Beyond
Arrived on 1 April, pretty much the start of the season. Campsite was deserted and we were plotting our route to go elsewhere, when Steve, the owner, arrived and invited us to stay, free of charge. They were so behind due to bad weather, they had not been able to get the site ship-shape and our arrival was unexpected. Steve offered to turn the boiler on, so we’d have hot water, so we accepted his kind hospitality. Steve and his wife then cleaned the toilet and shower block for us. What service! We had the entire campsite to ourselves. Bliss! There are 2 loos, 2 showers and 2 washrooms. They are modern and the showers have good hooks, shelves, towel rails. The site is rural, overlooks a fishing pond, there’s woodland surrounding. There’s rough paths around the site and across the river. They even have a small area with some goats, sheep, miniature horses. They have a few holiday homes, dotted throughout the site, if you don’t like camping. They say they get booked up over the summer - which doesn’t surprise me - especially families, as children would love the freedom this site allows. This a great location to tour the Dordogne. We loved it.
Fantastic Short Break
We stayed here last summer just outside of peak time in June. There was myself and my Husband, brother and sister in law, all under 30, our nieces, both under 10 and my mother in law, over 50. We stayed across 2 bell tents which were beautiful and comfy. The campsite is lovely and well set out, the shower blocks were clean and warm. We hired a car to get around and see some of the places near by which was great. The kids loved playing cards outside by candle light. Sharron, Steve and Harvey are great hosts for this wonderful campsite. I would highly recommend this if your in the area.
Wonderful place to escape
We stayed here last summer, and cannot recommend it highly enough. The site is set in a fabulous location to experience rural France yet is in close enough proximity to many great towns and villages to visit. The site is laid out brilliantly with plenty to keep the kids entertained and just enjoy being outdoors. It has a real multi cultural feel with my kids making new friends from 7 different countries! Being able to help with the animals is a real bonus for many youngsters and the hours spent in and on the lake have created memories that will last a lifetime. Sharron, Steve and Harvey are wonderful hosts and many of our fellow campers had become friends with them having returned several times over. This perfect gem of a place will not disappoint!
My family and I like to visit this fabulous campsite at least once a year, my teenage daughter likes to sit on the jetty reading whilst her brother enjoys fishing on the lake. Some lovely walks and fantastic bakeries. We fly from Leeds direct to Limoges and hire a car which is really cheap. Book it , you certainly won’t be disappointed .
This is a perfect camping site for families. We stayed for 4 nights and could have stayed longer. Our daughters got to feed the resident animals and ride a donkey. There was a small lake with complimentary canoes. We received a daily delivery of fresh bakery. The grounds were rustic and homely, the site was really good value and to be honest it's one of the best sites we've ever stayed in. Would go back in an instant!
Best Campsite in the World. Fact.
Myself and my boyfriend stayed here in July for a week, and I was absolutely blown away! It is in the most amazing part of France, far enough away from everywhere but near enough to be close to all the things you need! The campsite itself is in the most amazing spot ever, I wouldn't change a thing. The river at the bottom at the campsite is beautiful, and perfect for a paddle. The surroundings are incredible with loads of walks and things to find, like the fairy garden. The facilities are 10/10. Everything was simple, clean and well looked after and Sharon and Steve make you feel right at home. The weekly curry nights are a great get together and you feel like part of the family. Nothing was ever too much trouble. We certainly didn't want to leave at the end of our stay, and will planning for the next trip!
Nature, Sunshine, Owls!
We had an fabulous 10 days here in August camping with our kids aged 4 and 7. What a simply amazing find. Brilliant safe campsite if you have young kids. Ours loved the fairy garden, canoeing on the little lake and chasing the inquisitive kittens around! Steve Sharron and Harvey have created a wonderful place.. Generous pitches, great facilities and simple peace and quiet. Owls were calling every night, the tapping of nuthatches in the dawn was our alarm clock, a friendly hedgehog blundered into out table while we sat enjoying some local wine! There are plenty of nearby lakes for swimming and cooling off. A cold stream to paddle in on-site. Fresh bread and croissant deliveries to tent door every morning. Steve and Sharron also host a curry night once a week. It really is very friendly! It was a wonderful place to relax and let nature take over. We will be back!
Peace, nature, starry skies.
Thank you Sharon, Steve and Harvey for a fantastic week. We will be back. The site is very well appointed whilst retaining the magic of camping. The pitches are big and the site was peaceful. Our children loved the freedom of heading into the woods to explore. Steve and Sharon have carefully created lots of different areas to sit, barbecue, birdwatch, paddle, play, fish, read, canoe... Not to be missed.
We enjoyed our stay here for a number of reasons; the lovely pitches and location, the friendly animals on site for the kids to entertain and the good facilities (showers were excellent). The highlight of the week was the green woodwork lesson from MIke, a local craftsman from the UK. The local area is stunning- Uzerche is beautiful- and it it so quiet. When we visited (mid August) things on the camp site and in the local area were already slowing down. Unfortunately, the curry night was cancelled (due to forecast rain that never came). We would recommend the site, especially as a stop on the way down or up...3 nights would be ideal.
We stayed on this site for four nights, really in order to make our journey south a little less frantic and it ended up being one of our favourite sites. Steven and Sharron are very welcoming. On the first night of our stay there happened to be a communal curry night. Made from scratch by Sharron, it was a stunning curry with all of the trimmings homemade. Definitely not to be missed. The site is peaceful, tranquil, full of lovely areas to sit and stroll. The pitches are generous and well cared for. The shower block is beautifully clean and maintained.
The surrounding area is full of things to see and do, without the press of tourists present further south.
We will be back for sure! Thanks for the stay!
Magical is precisely the word!
I read the other reviews and had high hopes for this campsite and it did not disappoint! The owners are a genuinely lovely, down to Earth couple from West Yorkshire and they were so easy going and helpful, we really enjoyed chatting with them, and they went above and beyond to help us settle in after a very stressful journey from Dover to the Limousin (ferry delayed, traffic jams around paris). Tell site is just wonderful. So peaceful, quiet and picturesque. We had a magical evening enjoying a little BBQ next to lake, it was truly wonderful! The area is so pretty; rolling hills, beautiful little towns, sunshine, really rural and gorgeous. We found Uzerche to be utterly stunning, although very quiet. The stroll down to and along the river is lovely. We went out to explore the Limousin and had a particularly lovely walk at Lac du Valette, and also loved some of the 'most beautiful villages' in the area - well worth exploring! We will, without a doubt, return to this wonderful site; it is a convenient place for a stop on the way further south too.
Possibly my favourite place on earth...
I simply love this place. As per the other reviewer, we too have visited this campsite for the past 3 consecutive years and quite possibly will again this summer. Yes, there are other lovely campsites and areas to visit in the UK and France, but every one I visit I find comparing to La Geneste. There's something magical about the atmosphere here. Time slips away (as do our two boys who vanish into the woodland for hours on end!). There's no swimming pool, club house or bar, but it is all the better for it. Fun is made for adults and kids by going for walks round the site, feeding the animals or messing around in and on the lake. The site is incredibly safe for children (albeit the lake is pretty deep, so best to keep an eye on non swimmers), and mine love the freedom they can have here having their own special adventures, usually with some other kiddies they've met along the way! Everyone gets to know each other and the weekly curry nights enforce that. The site is about a 10 minute drive from Uzerche, which is a beautiful small town and has lots going on throughout the summer. There is a lovely large municipal swimming pool just outside the town that was refurbished a couple of years ago which we always make a couple of visits to as well as some lovely lakes all within a few miles of the site.
The campsite suffers from no light pollution at all so has the most spectacular view of the stars at night. Most evenings, we put the boys to bed in our tent, grabbed a bottle of red wine (and some other campers) and headed down to the barbecue area by the lake for the light show to begin. For the last three years we have been blessed with meteor showers and usually got to see at least 10 shooting stars per evening.
Sharron and Steve work tirelessly to make their campsite as friendly (not just from their welcome, but also the other campers on site) and as hospitable a place as it is possible to stay. They go so far above and beyond just running their site as a business, but genuinely want their visitors to enjoy their time away from home as much as it is possible and for everyone to become friends - it really is a very special place.
a little patch of heaven
I cannot recommend this campsite enough. We have been coming here for 3 years now and we've just booked up for our 4th. We never intended on sticking with 1 campsite, always planned on trying as many different ones and different areas as possible, but we fell in love with "the fairy garden" as the kids call it. There is so much to do in the surrounding areas, we haven't even scratched the surface. We've spent many a day lazing around the campsite, boating on the lake, walking around the gorgeous grounds and feeding and watching the animals. The area around the campsite is very tranquil, hills and woods as far as the eye can see. There are many swimming lakes near by, lots of quaint towns and the dordogne is a short drive away. The owners are so friendly and will do anything to make your stay better. We attended the curry evening last year which was amazing. The food was excellent and it was great getting together with other campers and some of the locals. We can't wait to go again this year!
The "coolest" camping we have been to
When we first parked the car at the entrance, we really felt confused...what kind of place ist this? The reception is a garden house...nobody was around...it felt a bit dark...we were desperately in need of a nice holiday after a really har year of work...we have been to several "cool campings" before, and this one didn't seem to fit quite in the picture...
As we were searching for a pitch to put our tent at, the owner came towards us...and I remember how suddenly that strange feeling change and finally completely dissappeared disappeared ...within an hour we felt we were in a unique, magical surrounding.
It is such a great place...how to describe it...very simple and yet full of details ...surprising "corners" ......nice People, not a "Glamping place" , not stilysh but beautifull...peacefull... genuine...often you dont even feel like you are in a camping place at all... a place where you feel free and cared for...The owners love what they do and make you feel at home. The kind of place that you think doesnt exist any more...Its cooler than the "Cool campings" we have been to...because its not "designed" ...it is real...of course I would not be against a good espresso machine or mini-bar above the lake ...but here you realize that having a perfect holiday ist not about haven EVERYTHING...but about having the REALLY IMPORTANT things...The kind of place your children can never grow out of ...We made a course in green wood work with a lovely guy (ex-fire man, definitely very nice!!!)...joined the very delicious curry-evening...if you happen to have friends that do not like camping (as we do) they can rent out one of the wooden-cabins which are really amazing... I love visiting new places, always new places... but here I dream of coming back again, year after year, with my daughter and her friends ...at the age of 4, 5, 6 10 ,13... since it is the kind of place that children connect to at a very deep level...and they can enjoy in a new way as they grow older...THANK YOU for running this place the way you do!!! We definitely weill come back!
We went over there for a week-end in October to attend a gathering of green wood workers. The place is splendid, the owner lovely and welcoming. Nature around and inside the camp-site is brilliant.
Mobile-homes and chalets are 1st class comfort.
Camping area is lovely and surrounded by trees.
The facilities are brilliant and super clean.
If I had to resume it in one word...Paradise
Thanks for the amazing week-end
A piece of heaven!
Our family have now visited this site three times in the last four years and wouldn't dream of camping in France without staying here as part of our holiday.
We love this site. It's as quiet and relaxing or adventurous and fun as you want it to be depending on your mood. You can leave the site to explore the surrounding area or lose whole days in this beautiful campsite where nature is quite literally all around you. Our children who are now 7 and 5 find endless things to keep them happy that don't include games consoles or TV, though the WIFI helps if you need it.
The facilities are good and kept immaculately clean and the English family that run the site are friendly and helpful. There are unique touches all over the site which show great attention to detail, from the benches in just the place you'd like to sit and enjoy the view, to the homemade chessboards and fairy garden. Sharron's weekly curry nights are a fabulous social event where campers and locals all gather to chat under the marquee with wine and delicious food.
As the description very accurately says, we always stay longer than we mean to and leave, already looking forward to our next visit. The best campsite we have ever stayed on.
