Riverside camping with space and facilities for kids to go wild

You don’t have to be a good swimmer to have a good time at Huttopia La Plage Blanche, but it's certainly water-loving campers that glean the most out of this well-equipped campsite on the banks of the Loue. Stretched along the river’s edge, the grassy tent pitches here have easy access right down to where the languid waters flow – safe, slow and thoroughly refreshing. If you don’t like the thought of the soft, silted riverbed oozing between your toes then you can retreat to the on-site swimming pool or the bubbling L-shaped Jacuzzi. Sounds like a tough life, hey?

The water-based fun is symptomatic of the sort of campsite Huttopia La Plage Blanche is. With 188 camping pitches this is not a spot that does things by halves and doesn’t fall into the ‘small and intimate category’. Yet what it does offer is facilities by the bucket load and a surprising ability, despite its scale, to still feel deceptively uncommercial and personable. It has all the essentials any self-respecting French campsite should – fresh baguettes and croissants in the morning, bottles of the local wine in the campsite bar and a boules pitch where the fiercest of family duels take place – while its riverside location means the best pitches have a great sense of space, with the open river on one side.

Offsite, the best bet is to bring a bike (or rent one from reception) and head cross country towards the beautiful village of Dole, built up around the banks of another river – the Doubs – and partly populated in the summer by the wealth of tourists who chug through in their narrow boats. Perhaps the main highlight of the place is some of its tiny restaurants and bars (including an excellent converted space around the old water mill). It’s also the birthplace of Louis Pasteur, and the small museum inside his old family home offers a fascinating insight into his monumental legacy to the world of science.

Further afield, dramatic Besançon to the north east is a must-visit. Located on the inside of a remarkable tight bending meander, it seems to denote a shift in geology where France becomes mountainous and forested, like hills of giant broccoli. The hilltop Citadelle and the town centre's haughty cathedrals are particular highlights. Though walking up to the former is tough on the legs – particularly after all that swimming.

The campsite has 3 washroom blocks (toilets, sinks, and hot showers), 2 of which have disabled access and 1 with baby facilities. There is a small indoor swimming pool and a much larger outdoor one, plus a paddling pool for younger children and the river itself to swim (and fish) in. There's a playground, boules pitch, table tennis, table football, volley ball court, basketball court and bikes available for hire. The central lodge has internet and free Wi-Fi and there's a 'camper's corner' shop for any essentials you've forgotten, a library corner and tourist information in reception. Activities for children are also organised throughout school holidays.

Suitable For

Tents, campervans, motorhomes, caravans, families, groups, couples, pets… everyone!

Right at the campsite entrance there is an excellent activity centre (03 84 37 72 04), that offers high-wire tree trails and a lengthy zip-line that runs from one side of the river to the other. Really, though, the centre is best used for hiring equipment. You can take a canoe or kayak and paddle down the Loue for the day. They offer one way routes so you can simply drift downstream and get picked up later. You can also hire mountain bikies for exploring the wildlife and heritage of the Jura in the Val d'Amour and Chaux forest. Further afield, it's 20km to the pretty town of Dole – a great place to go for evening drinks and a meal – and historic Besançon (50km) is a must.

Food & Drink

The campsite has a bar restaurant that overlooks the river – pizzas from the stone oven are a must. Traditional fresh bread and pastries are available every morning, ordered the evening before.

Great for young kids

Lovely spot . Had a lovely 4 night stay in our T5. Perfect pool nice and warm !! River is shallow and lovely !!! Our kids loved building dams watching the fish and dragonflies . Great pitch with electric hook up loads of space for kids to play with other children. Only improvements ... Service could be a bit speedier at the pizza bar Toilets were a bit dodgy but fine . Overall I would highly recommend the site

Relaxing by the river

We had a wonderful few days relaxing by the river at this campsite. Couldn't book a Riverside itch, but contacted the campsite directly, and they were able to sort it out. The extra was worth it for us, as we had direct access to the water for the kids. Weather was perfect (maybe we were lucky!) So didn't do much, apart from a 2 hour canoeing trip with the company next door (20euros/adult, 15 for children). Supermarket was a 10 min drive, but there was a small shop and pizza place in the village, around a mile away.
