Camping de Troyes

Europe France Eastern France Alsace, Lorraine & Champagne

Camping de Troyes, 7 rue Roger Salengro, 10150 Pont-Ste-Marie, France
A handy stop-off point when journeying across France but with enough to be a gem in its own right. Happily contrasting its green, rural feel with its town-side location.
There’s something apposite about the medieval town of Troyes – the capital of the Champagne region – having a town centre that’s shaped like a champagne cork. It’s a lovely centre, too: a huddle of medieval buildings that stand out proudly against the town’s work-a-day charm. Though formed in the Roman era, most of Troyes’ architecture dates from the Middle Ages when it was an important trading town.

Just along the road, in Pont-Sainte-Marie, is Camping de Troyes, the town’s official campsite. Though a former municipal spot, the owners here have done everything in their power to transform it into something much more alluring than the word ‘municipal’ suggests and today it is a surprisingly green site that’s just a short drive away from Troyes’ contrasting centre, where wooden-framed buildings seem to almost topple into one another.

When you first arrive at the campsite you could be forgiven for thinking that you were walking into a motorhome nightmare. But keep the faith and head to the back of the site, where you’ll find a tent haven surrounded by shrubs and trees. Suddenly you’ll realise why it’s worth a few nights’ breather. Although you can easily feel you have your own private space, the plot itself isn’t exactly sprawling, so being at the end of the site doesn’t mean a long walk if you get caught short in the middle of the night.

The site is modern, but not overly manicured, and the pitches aren’t regimented. Squirrels rustle amongst the old trees, flowers splash colour around the perimeter and a swimming pool injects some playful fun into it all, accompanied by evening campfires arranged when the weather permits. The overall feel is ‘organised’ and those using it as a handy stop off point on the way to Southern France will leave thoroughly refreshed and ready to get on their way.

Campers hanging around for longer, who feel they’ve exhausted the local charms, can busy themselves with the nearby Parc Naturel Régional de la Forêt d’Orient, just 20 minutes away by car. The forest’s natural lakes proffer plenty of outdoor activities and can be accessed by La vélovoie verte (Green Bicycle Path) – detailed maps are available at reception.

Friendmy and relaxed

Sep 6, 2017 by Kellyi

We arrived quite late in the day. The staff could not have been more helpful and offered us a great rate. The pool was clean and tidy and the kids loved it. The whole site has a mature feel to it with beautiful trees - we even had a ripe cherry tree right outside our door! Would highly recommend. Wish we had more than one night there.

What a disappointment!

After reading the reviews, we thought we had found a good last stop in France. But not the case. Just about everything was wrong here--long walk to the shower/loo block which were not clean; the pitches had no hedges and therefore, there was no privacy. Also they weren't numbered and with neither hedges nor numbers, hard to tell where one pitch began and the other ended; the wifi was abysmal; the restaurant was jolly but the tables weren't clean, bees abounded and rubbish was blowing around the place. Check in took a while. All in all, it had the feel of a neglected, disorderly, unkempt place. We couldn't wait to get out of there!

Beloved first and last stop in france

For years we make our first and last stop on our French adventures in the Troyes campsite in Pont Sainte Marie, and it is getting better all the time. first came an onsite  bar restaurant, then came a swimming pool, and this year the plaza in the centre of the camping -where it all happens...-got a facelift with nice whiye pebbles and a big wooden horse .My kids love the giant jumping pillow and the pool and the inside games. I like to watch the squirrels on the camp and the stroll into town , visiting a church or museum and the narrow middle aged streets lined with not so straight wooden houses.... its all bliss...

Camping de Troyes: Sept 2014

Sep 7, 2014 by JenL

We had 2 nights here on our way home from 2 weeks camping around East and Central France and really enjoyed it.  It was one of our favourite places on our trip and one that we will definitely come back to.  The site was relatively quiet due to all the schools being back and the on-site bar/ restaurant was closed due to end of season, however, this only made it feel a bit more remote that 1 mile from the city centre.  A 10/ 15 minute cycle took us into the lovely city centre where there were an abundance of cafes and restaurants.  I agree with other reviews that you perhaps couldn't stay for a longer than a long weekend but we will definitely be back!

camping de Troyes 2014

Campsite is handily located near a bus stop that takes you directly into Troyes, however this does mean that you are on a fairly main road so don't go expecting an evening stroll in the countryside. Pitch sizes are generous but the toilet block and showers feel like they need updating and the strange setup meant that a lot of men wondered around confused as to which were their toilets!

For the first night of our stay there was a communal freezer to freeze blocks but then it disappeared for them to use in the restaurant leaving us with nowhere to freeze ice blocks - very strange!

There is nothing really wrong with this campsite but there is nothing special about it either especially compared to a lot of other beautiful sites on this website so i was a bit surprised it was featured here. As mentioned above its a handy stop off between Calais and the south but that's about all.

Camping Troyes April 2014

This site is very quiet but not too far from the city (2km or something). Staff is very friendly and the showers are clean (!!) WiFi works fine and bus stop is very near. Good stop over for a few nights, loads of things to see in town, staff knows good places :) Now we have to come back this summer to see the pool and restaurant opened!!

Camping de Troyes Aug 2013

We had three nights here on our way back from Chamonix, and really enjoyed it. The site's very good, easy to get the tent pegs in, flat, and plenty of space and enough privacy. We tried out the Wop Wop pizzeria, and that was excellent. Troyes itself is a beautiful town and we went birdwatching around the Lac du Foret d'Orient, although it was the wrong time of year - agree with other reviews that it might not have enough to offer for a longer stay, but a great site nonetheless.

Camping de Troyes

My girlfriend and I stayed here in the last summer. We used it as our first stopping point after getting off the ferry from Calais. The pitch size was excellent and private. Staff were very friendly and amiable. Ask to for one of the pitches at the back if you want to avoid the children! It's only a short drive to the centre of Troyes, which was a real highlight for us. Cheap champagne and medieval houses! Not sure i'd spend a whole holiday there, as i'm not sure how much there is to do. But it's definitely a good stopping point if you are heading south.
