Smallsville camping with plenty of room to stretch out.

Domaine names are a tricky business. Not those double-yew double-yew double-yew dot internet domain names, but the names of little French estates. Call them something fancy like Domaine de Beauregard and the neighbours think you’re pretentious. So this place keeps it pretty simple. Domaine du Bourg, it says on the gate: ‘Small Market Town Estate’. And what’s inside’s fairly straightforward too. Dutch owners Peter and Trudi de Lange have converted some old farming buildings into a cracking, pretty sizeable home, along with four gîtes, three B&B bedrooms and some dorm rooms for hikers. Beyond the huddle of buildings, meanwhile, is 250 acres of camping space with a trio of canvas safari lodges, a wooden gypsy caravan and a clutch of just 25 grassy pitches (so you can do the maths to work out how much room there is).

The small market town in question is Gannay-sur-Loire, a sleepy little place if truth be told, but the quiet roads and gentle countryside are ideal for exploration by bike. These are available for hire from the site and come equipped with maps. The site is also on the new ‘EuroVélo6’ cycle route, which stretches across six countries from the Atlantic coast to the Black Sea. The French section starts at St Nazaire and follows the course of the River Loire through Orléans and Nevers, before swinging north through Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and Slovakia and south through Hungary and Serbia, finishing in Romania. So there’s no real excuse for coming here and just lounging around.

The Loire also beckons budding water babies down to its glistening depths. There are plenty of lazy watersports available, including kayaks available to hire from the site. The slow, soothing pace of the river is the perfect antidote to all your worries. Drift along in the sun on what is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful rivers in France (and also the country's longest) – it was also awarded UNESCO heritage status in 2002 so is pleasantly free from noise, buildings and commercial fare. Instead the banks are either alive with chirping wildlife or quaint historic villages – the perfect place to pick up yet another buttery croissant as you glide along.

The Owner Says

(info supplied by the campsite)

The coolcamping description is very well done and there is not much to add. In 2015 we added a traditional gipsy wagon and 3 luxury safarilodge tents to our choice of accommodations. If you do not feel like cooking, then join us for a so called "table d'hôte", freshly prepared using vegetables and herbs from the kitchen garden. Vegetarian, a hearty cyclist/hikers meal it can all be taken in account by us. If wished you can also enjoy our daily served sumptuous breakfast. Beside the itinerary EuroVélo6 we are along several other bike and hike routes as for example 'the Loire by Bike', 'Burgundy by Bike', 'Grand Randonnée nr 3'. Our guest we also propose a folder with many plastified bicycle and walking itineraries around our property, which you can take along. Free WIFI on the campsite or at our hotspot. We hope to welcome you on our property. Trudi and Peter.

Loire Valley Campsite

I'm a bit out of date now. I actually stayed here two years ago! But, assuming it hasn't changed too much, I LOVE IT! So close to the river Loire (really good for canoeing and really good wildlife) and surely the most historic area in France? Every town is small, old and amazing (plus amazing food!) The campsite is really friendly, loads of space, shade and all round good and natural. My 5 stars are better late than never I hope!

Perfect Rural Campsite

We camped for 3 days in June 2015.   As it was off season it was quiet and we chose a secluded corner of the orchard and felt like we had the place to ourselves. The facilities are well kept and modern.  Lovely hot showers.   There is a covered dining/social area which is useful if the weather turns and even a small swimming pool.  Lovely walk to the tiny bakery and some great walks to the river Loire with the dog! We experienced the site at a quiet time - but think it would keep its rural charm at all times. Hope to be back again and will certainly recommend to friends

We camped for 10 days in August 2015 and absolutely loved it. You choose your pitch from a beautiful site either amongst the trees or out in the sun. The amenities are well kept.  Cars aren't allowed on the site except for an initial drop off at the beginning of the stay and for a final collection at the end and there is a wonderful playground, making ideal for younger children. There is a bakery and a butcher about a relaxed five minutes walk from the site. All in all it just makes for an incredibly friendly, chilled-out family camping experience. We intend to go back!
