A wonderfully hidden, family-friendly, riverside campsite with space for just a handful of lucky campers and wild swimming.

Blink and you could miss Camping Moulin De Liort. Hidden off a winding road that worms its way around the wooded valley of the River Liort, the campsite feels utterly lost amongst the trees. Indeed many have been undone here in the past. A group of campers once had to be returned by the local farmer after losing their way on the local hiking routes. An impromptu eau de vie tasting session in his orchard nicely perked them back up first – no one does wilderness rescue quiet like the French.

Aside from pungent local drinks and verdant vegetation, there’s plenty more to love about this tiny pocket of Aveyron countryside though. Follow the track down to Moulin De Liort itself and, beyond an old stone house, the most charming of campsites reveals itself. Anne-Marie Simons is the homeowner and camping host extraordinaire, with a tonne of veg from her garden available to buy (along with other essential groceries) and a wealth of local information to share with you. Alongside her husband, she also helps host the campsite’s popular summer events, including tractor and trailer rides, great communal campfire evenings and delicious pancake nights.

Including the house and garden, the site comprises some five acres of space, split down one side by the bubbling river, whose presence supplies a constant soothing soundtrack. Almost all of the 18 camping pitches are perched on flat ground beside the wild-swimming-friendly water, which is the perfect height for children to paddle and frolic in. Older swimmers, meanwhile, will need to drive the 10 minutes to the confluence with the larger Viaur River, where there is also a pleasant park and picnic space beside the beach.

Elsewhere, the region’s medieval towns are the real highlight. Walking through the ancient cloisters in Villefranche de Rouergue, taking in the sights and sounds of the market at Sauveterre or sitting in a café in Najac looking up at its hilltop castle, you get a sense that while the world has modernised the atmosphere of these old towns has hardly changed at all. Najac, in particular, is a fantastic old spot. Head back down hill from the castle and you can rent canoes at the riverside to take in the whole valley at an unbeatably relaxing pace.

Moulin de Liort is a campsite in the heart of a gorgeous valley. A little river the Liort streams through, giving a calm and cosy atmosphere. A parking area is provided away from the pitches. Price included 2 adults + car (ou Camper van) + Electricity On site: - 5 toilets - 3 showers - Free WiFi available -  bar with a terrace - The shop there sells home-grown fruit and veg, eggs from the hens, homemade jams, bread, juices and different wines. - A children's playground and a ping pong table, children can play in the on-site river. During peak season, activities are also organised: hikes, tours of local farms, communal campfires, hand-craft activities and more.

Grass Pitch With Electricity
The site is in a beautiful setting. However when we arrived in August the main campsite was closed and there were only a couple of other campers in a small area near the owners house. Several of the things we had chosen the site for (communal meals/kids stuff /bar/snacks on site) weren’t available. Because of this it wasn’t suitable for what we needed and we had to cancel our booking and find a new campsite. I would suggest contacting the site in advance to check whether the amenities as described will be available as they have a no refund policy. They did give us a partial refund in the end but it would have saved us time and money if the information had been more accurate.

Grass Pitch With Electricity
Peaceful camping
This was such a beautiful campsite. A calming space created by the owners which fits with their sustainable ethos. Large pitches by the stream, an abundance of wildlife and peace, but not much else to get in the way of a relaxing time. The area is quite countryside with plenty of pretty villages to visit within a short drive. Facilities are spotlessly clean Would highly recommend.

Grass Pitch With Electricity
We loved it here. Our pitch was alongside the stream - as all the pitches are - with welcome shade and some sun. The valley is a verdant paradise, just so beautiful. Herman and Anne-Marie have created a wonderful place and were kind and interested. We had pancakes at their small bar after a long, lost cycle ride. Beware that cycling in these parts is only for the dedicated - it's not called The Land of a Hundred Valleys for nothing - long climbs, followed by steep descents with not much in between. The local towns of Sauveterre, Najac and Villefranche were all beautiful and St Cirq-Lapopie worth the hour's drive. The whole area was a revelation and the campsite perfect in its simplicity. We shall return.

This was our favourite campsite of the 7 we stayed at. It’s a beautiful site with lots of space, clean facilities, wonderful hosts, a gorgeous stream that runs through the site which you can walk through to deeper pools. Very relaxing, lots to do in the area but also lovely just hanging out at the campsite!

Moulin de Liort is a beautifull camping, I've been there many times and I still want to go back. The camping lies in a vally between two little villages. Nature is beautifull and the river which goes through the camping is nice and refreshing. The owners speak Dutch, French and English very well, they do everything to make youre holliday one to remember! It's a child friendly camping, for even the youngest of children. There is fresh bread every morning, and enough brochures in the shop with many walks and other things to do. In short, this camping is the perfect place for a relaxing time away from home. They will see me returning for sure!

Very nice campsite, lovely valley with a small stream running through. In summer a paridise for children who can play and swim just in front of their pitch. Lots of nice villages in the area. Great walks from the campsite (maps available). Fresh vegetables and eggs. Out of the holliday season peace and quite for the elderly.

From the host
In the heart of nature, camping to your heart's content. Large pitches, seperate carpark, privacy. Good sanitary equipment. Organic vegetables, wine and eggs. Situated deep in the unspoilt countryside of the Aveyron, a region of France not yet on the main tourist routes. Nearest towns of interest Villefranche de Rouergue, Najac, Sauveterre de Rouergue, Belcastel, Albi, Rodez. In July and August dogs are not allowed on the campsite.
Nearby attractions

Revel in the local landscape. The hills around the campsite are perfect for hiking, the River Viaur (a 15-minute drive) is full of popular swimming spots and river beaches, while local lake La Roucarié is 30 minutes by car. Canoeing, horse riding and cycling are all possible too. For children, try a visit to the Parc Animalier of Pradinas (10 minutes; 06 08 52 37 11), where brown bears and wolves are among the main highlights. The region is best known, however, for its bastides – medieval fortified towns – such as Sauveterre, Najac and Villefranche de Rouergue (home to one of the largest monasteries in the world) – and the episcopal city of Albi, less than an hour from the campsite, has even been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rodez, the capital of the Aveyron, has a particularly magnificent cathedral and Belcastel is also just a half hour drive away.

Food and drink

The on-site bar serves a range of coffees – filter, espresso, cappuccino, americano and so on – along with tea and delicious home-made fruit juice. Every evening they also make French fries to take away and on Sunday's they have a big pancake cooking night, both savoury and sweet (not to be missed). If you fancy eating out, try Le Café du Faubourg (05 65 81 25 47) in La Salvetat-Peyralès (2km away) or Auberge de Bruno et Marie (05 65 81 43 89). It's 11km to Rieupeyroux where the restaurant in Hotel du Commerce (05 65 65 53 06) offers the poshest option, while Bar de l’Agriculture (05 65 65 52 69) is far more relaxed. Sauveterre du Rouergue, 15 km away, is worth the drive for utterly charming La Grappe D’Or restaurant (05 65 72 00 62).
