Traditional tent pitches meet top-spec holiday facilities at this green, family campsite within pedalling distance of the Brittany beaches

There’s a turning point beyond the entrance of Flower Camping Les Genêts that seems to divide two different pages in this campsite’s story. Turn right and you can follow the tarmac through regimented rows of static mobilhomes that range just over 50 in number. Turn left, however, and the tarmac gives way to grass and white-grit pathways, small, cobbled flowerbeds and a mass of large, traditional tent pitches, bordered by low hedges and mature trees. The result is a campsite that offers the best of both worlds. You can pitch your tent quietly at one end of the campsite, within easy range of a wash-block, but leave the kids to romp off in the opposite direction, where the campsite’s more ‘holiday park’ facilities include swimming pools, water-slides, volleyball, table tennis and a whole lot more.

As if to offer a soft transition between these two campsite personalities – statics on one side, camping pitches on the other – there is also a collection of ‘Free Flower’ tents in the middle. These pre-pitched safari tents offer a camping alternative for those travelling light, each divided into two bedrooms (suited to a family of four) with a kitchen and dining area to the front and wooden decking with outdoor furniture. In hot weather you can roll up parts of the canvas walls too, allowing the breeze to flow refreshingly through.

Of course, the real appeal of the campsite is not its wide choice of sunny or shady pitches, laid-back ambience or well-kept wash-blocks – all amiable attributes in their own right – but its handy proximity to the coast. Hire bikes and you can pedal to the nearest beach in less than 10 minutes. That’s the most important factor, right? The long, white crescent of sand there bends around to its end at the old harbour town of Guilvinec, still a working commercial harbour for small boats and the town to pedal on to for the freshest sea-food. In the opposite direction, meanwhile, the beaches of Pointe de la Torche are also within range – a magnet for watersports enthusiasts.

Nearby

Brittany is famed for its heritage and the local villages are littered with ancient churches – 15th, 16th and 17th century – and old town squares. Particularly picturesque local ports include Kerity, St Guénolé and Le Guilvinec (where, each weekday at 5pm, the fishing boats bring in their catch), while the lighthouse at Phare d’Eckmühl (+33 6 07 21 37 34) is a good spot to start, 5km from the campsite. There's a big carpark alongside where you can leave your car to go for a wander along the headland. Follow the GR34 signs – the long distance footpaths runs the entire length of the Brittany coast – or bring bikes to join the cycle trail that runs the full 50km north to Pointe de Raz. It's 6km to the beaches around Pointe de la Torche, where water-sports options are endless: Surf, windsurf, sea kayak, stand-up-paddle-board, scuba dive or simply sun yourself on the beach.

Food & Drink

There's a snack bar and chippie open daily, selling ice, ice-creams, cold drinks, bread, pastries, confectionary and newspapers. There's an Intermarché and Lidl at the roundabout in Pendreff, just less than mile away, and a Carrefour supermarket in Penmarch. For simple seafood try An Atoll (+33 2 98 58 18 73) down on the waterfront in Guilvinec or sit on the deck outside Le Poisson d'Avril (+33 2 98 58 23 83), a popular spot and slightly more fancy.

Lovely site

Have just camped here for 16 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. Toilets and showers are very clean and it was a bonus being able to adjust temperature on the shower. Heated pool made it for us as our 2 boys spent a lot of time in there. Onsite snack bar serves pizza and mussels (amongst another things) so that was handy on a few nights. Only negative for us was we seemed to have the smallest pitch. We have a large tent but there were other big tents which managed to fit event shelters and cars on the pitch - we had no space to put tarpaulin on the front of our tent which we need for when it rains. Struggled to get car on pitch as well. Owners very helpful when our hook up wouldn’t reach so happily loaned us one. Is very popular with French tourists and the kids club was aimed at them. There was some entertainment in the evenings but again, a quiz in French did not work for us with very limited French. Plenty to see around the area, all within a short distance away. Our children would have preferred more things to do apart from the pool - bouncy castle got boring after a while and the play area was aimed at younger children. Would recommend as a site though

Not cool.

This was not a 'Cool Camping' place. Yes, the showers and facilities were excellent: they were kept clean, they were modern and they were plentiful. The swimming pool area was also nice. But you would expect as much on a commercial site and this is what it was. The pitches were crammed together, of average size and there were no nice areas for children to go and play. There was absolutely nothing on this site that made it 'cool' in any way at all. The welcome when we arrived was non existence. We were shown to our pitch but given no information about anything. We had to find everything out for ourselves and didn't enjoy going to reception to ask questions as there was no friendliness there at all. There were no freezers readily available to freeze ice-packs; you had to go to reception and pay €1 every time you wanted to freeze one. Although the beaches and surrounding area are lovely, we would never stay at this site again and are still struggling to work out why it is in 'Cool Camping' at all.

A pleasant experience.

Fantastic campsite. Really well looked after. Busy but not over-crowded, very popular with French tourists, who are very friendly and considerate. Lots of flowers all around! Shower, toilet, washing facilities etc. were always clean. There were more than enough for everyone. We never had to queue up to use them, even during busy periods. The pitches are really spacious and you can park your car by your tent, if so you wish. If you are having a pitch with electricity, you will need an special adaptor, which you can buy in reception (18 euros) and a very long cable extension, to make sure you can have access to it. Having the swimming pool (outdoor and indoor) in the campsite, was a real plus. In the mornings, the kids just got up and went straight to the water, leaving us to relax and enjoy the weather. Also is great for days when the weather is not too hot. In the evenings, there is entertainment by the bar for both children and adults, usually music of some sort. It was low key but quite fun! Lights out at 11.00pm. We didn't try the kids clubs, but activities were also available in the afternoon for young children. The people in charge were very friendly and helpful. Our French is sadly almost non-existent, but with their little English and good will, they were always able to help us with our enquiries. There are bicycles on site that you can hire and a really nice bicycle route that you can do, which we recommend. There are at least three big super markets only a few minutes by car from the campsite, as well as plenty of patisseries and boulangeries in the villages nearby, which is very convenient. Beaches are amazing and are also within a short drive. All in all, we had a really nice time and we would recommend it to anyone with kids of all ages.
