In a time-honoured tale, English ex-pats Anne and Ralph Harrison went looking for the French countryside dream and found it just outside the picturesque Breton village of Plouguenast. Discovering their own pocket of rural bliss, this affable couple set about transforming the sprawling grounds of the newly acquired farmhouse into one of the area's prettiest spots for pitching up.
Pinàbre (named after the plentiful towering pine trees which tower over the grounds) is the Goldilocks' bed of campsites – not too big; not too small; just right. Well... we say not too big – though it is an ample 7,000 square metres, your conscientious hosts have a refreshingly informal 'no-set pitches' policy, with a maximum of just 10 emplacements.
With all this free space, campers are free to boot a ball around the well-kempt, fir-fringed field without fear of disturbing their fellow campers – though in a setting as tranquil as Pinàbre, such disagreeable natures are sure to melt away.
The site boasts all the ammenities we've come to expect of our French campsites (including a trampoline and paddling pool for the kids), though with a pleasing lack of commericalism.
Considerate to the last, Ann and Ralph will even let you borrow a bike from charming old barn for the short cycle along traffic-free lanes into Plouguenast for your morning pastries.
With a charming array of Breton towns just waiting to be discovered, and the golden sands and crashing waves of the Atlantic coast all within easy reach, isn't it about time you shared in Anne and Ralph's dream too?
10 pitches; 2 shower rooms with toilet & sink; washing up area; washing machine. 2 water points; 1 disposal point, electric hookups, WiFi.
Tents, caravans, motorhomes, dogs, families – yes.
The stunningly beautiful Abbaye de Bon-Repos (0033 296 24 82 20) is just 26 miles from Pinàbre, on the western end of Brittany's largest lake, the Lac de Guerlédanthe (itself a great spot for watersports). This 12th century Cistercian abbey hosts regular exhibitions of contemporary art, as well as a weekly farmers market every Sunday. Its waterside location boasts lovely views of the idyllic Nantes to Brest canal. If visiting in August, be sure to attend the yearly son et lumière – a dazzling historical reenactment featuring hundreds of costumed actors, animals, and a spectacular fireworks display. Learn about the industrial heritage of the region at Forges des Salle (0033 619 60 55 10), an 18th century settlement synonymous with the iron industry. Visit the period homes once lived in by the workers and marvel at the views over Quénécan forest – Breton's herbacious 'Little Switzerland'. There are 3 small beaches within driving distance, while Le-Val-Andre (about 30 minutes drive away) is one of Brittany's most beautiful (not to mention popular) with golden sands, a grand 19th century promenade, and a charming, 'hidden' harbour. The time-warp town of Pontivy is a must-see. Formerly Napoléonville and onetime capital of Breton dynasty, the Rohan family, Pontivy is a beguiling mix of imperial geometry and medieval architecture, dominated by the 15th century château overlooking the River Blavet. This bustling town is also home to a lively Monday market.
Food & Drink
Anne and Ralph are full of great local recommendations. L'Auberge (0033 296 28 77 31) and Le Bon Accueil (0033 296 73 40 70) in Plouguenast are both good shouts. If spending the day in Pontivy, head to L'Aiglon (0033 297 27 98 08) for a decent slice of pizza or the canal-side terrace at L’Auberge de l’île (0033 297 25 15 300) for some al fresco seafood.
From St. Malo, Cherbourg, Le Harve & Calais Ports: Take N176 heading Dinan/Saint Brieuc. Follow on to N12 heading for Saint Brieuc. Exit N12 at Le Petite Lamballe / Moncontour. Turn left at D768 heading for Moncontour. Follow D768 through Moncontour, you will see Plouguenast signposted. After sign for Plouguenast, look for Montorien Sign on your right in 5 miles. After Montorien sign in 1/2 mile on the right hand side you will see L'Auberge Restaurant sign & Gausson road sign. Take this right turn. Take first left signposted Lingouet, you will see 3 large farm buildings on your left. Straight ahead you will see site entrance.

Luxurious & Peaceful
Cleanest site ever in 30 years of camping
Camping at its best.
Really nice place to stay
Such a lovely place
We stayed at this lovely campsite in September 2015. On arrival, there was plenty of space and we could choose where to set up. Loads of space. We really enjoyed our stay. Very quiet location with small town (Plougenast) just down road. Cycled there a couple of times. We had great weather which helped, but would happily come back. Toilet, shower and washing up block in the longere were superb. Very clean and cosy. Our only regret is that we didn't spend more time chatting with Ann and Ralph as they were lovely. Thank you so much.
We stayed for two weeks on this wonderful campsite at the beginning of August. The facilities are spotless and the lovely owners Ann and Ralph made us feel so welcome! There is so much space for the children to run around and play without intruding upon other campers and there are even games such as croquet, tennis and football thoughtfully provided. It is such a relaxed and friendly site and Ralph and Ann even brought our laundry in for us when it started to rain before we got back to site! It was quite simply, as our daughter put it, "the best campsite ever"!!!! We look forward to visiting again in the future.
Laid back campsite
If you are looking for a campsite where you, your tent/camper, your kids and your dogs can spread out without limitations this is for you. Rock up, pick your pitch, enjoy a hot shower (any time of day) in the exceptionally clean wash rooms and relax. Ralph and Ann know what campers want from their sites and they make sure all boxes are ticked. The site feels large due to the limited number of pitches they allow and we really appreciated this during our stay. A great start to our trip.
We stayed here for 5 nights at the end of 6 week touring holiday in France. Absolutely delighted that we chose this site. Very much like an English CL. Very large immaculately kept field so plenty of room between caravans and tents. Very friendly and helpful owners who could take more outfits but don't so that the facilities are not crowded. We use are own shower and toilet but checked out the sites facilities which were immaculate and up to hotel standard (that is 5 star hotel). Plenty to do and see in the area. We will definitely use this site again. All this at an absolutely bargain site fee.
My wife and I travelled to Brittany to explore the countryside.
Pinabre campsite is a place to stay we can strongly recommend. The owners Ralph and Ann have a warm and friendly welcome. The camping area itself is very well presented and you get a sense of camping on somebody's lawn its that well kept.
The facilities are all in very good order....power, water, washing, showering etc....
The location of Pinabre campsite lends itself to being ideal for exploring the countryside. Everything is in reasonable travel distance.
We had a very relaxing time.
Had only two nights here in our tent but really appreciated everything. Ann and Ralph both work their socks off to keep the bathrooms, grounds and other areas immaculate, and they have put a lot of thought and consideration into providing extras, such as a picnic table, useful if you are a cyclist. The bonus is they really seem to enjoy having visitors and stopping for a chat. They are so welcoming. Nothing is too much trouble - information, ice blocks etc. We loved the space and can only hope these two can maintain the small numbers and great prices and make a living. We have no hesitation in recommending this site.
We stayed here for 2 nights as a base to watch the Tour de France from last week. The English owners were fantastic...accommodating, friendly, helpful. The campsite was 'full' when we stayed - that was all 10 'pitches' taken - but there was still loads of space and we certainly didn't feel crammed in like we had at other sites. The shower and toilets were clean and well maintained...in fact, it was like being in a hotel, not on a campsite! If we are in the area again we will definitely make another stop. Thank you!
Heaven in rural France
We found this pretty campsite in rural France. Perfect peace and quiet to relax and ideally situated to explore local region. From the beaches and headlands of the coast around St. Malo, Mont St Michel , to Rennes, Dinan (you must visit this gem) Josselin, the Foret de Brocéliande all within an hour on easy roads, and nearby Moncontour. The campsite is level, flat (not bumpy), fairly easy to drive pegs in. Plenty space 20-50 metres between campers. The site is surrounded by trees giving protection from the winds which can blow in Brittany. There is EHU for €3 if you need it and waste disposal. The are several taps with potable water. The toilets and showers are the cleanest I've ever found on any site with plenty hot water day or night and the hand towels, shower curtains are changed daily. There is a washing area for dishes and a washing machine is available for €3. There is a play area for children. We planned to stay 3 days and stayed 5. The owners Ralph and Ann are a delightful and welcoming couple who having experience of touring in a caravan themselves have created a perfect site. Its a 15 minute walk down a very quiet country road to a local mini market for supplies. The night skies are incredible here, when did you last see the Milky Way in all its majesty. This campsite has everything except the noise, clubhouse, water park, shop, dirty toilets, cold showers and the overcrowding found on so many sites. I highly recommend this site.

We loved Pinabre! We only stayed for one night on our way further south in August 2014 but it suited us down to the ground and we were disappointed we couldn't stay longer! It's a lovely and peaceful site with plenty of space between pitches. The shower/toilet facilities were great, very clean and modern and I was happy to take my flip flops off in the shower (something I can't always bring myself to do on a campsite!!)! Ralph was very welcoming and could not have been more helpful, even lending us an adaptor for the electric hook up when we foolishly forgot our own! We will definitely be back, hopefully for longer next time!
Pinabre relaxing and superb facilities
We have gone back to this wonderful site for the past 3 years and will be returning next year, Ralph and Ann are a lovely couple and run the best caravan and camping site in Brittany. It is a very quiet, friendly and has spotlessly clean facilities. Highly recommended for both 1 st timers in France to seasoned French caravan owners/campers. Not far from St Malo (1 hour) and Caen (3hrs). As others have stated before a fantastic site and truly a gem of a location. Counting down till we go next year.
The perfect family camp
The other reviews say all there is to say about the site and the surrounding area. The site is spotlessly clean, with excellent facilities and friendly, helpful hosts in Ann and Ralph.
Our family camp comprised 8 adults and five children in two tents, a caravan and a camper van. Ann and Ralph were very relaxed about where we chose to pitch and were happy for us to 'take over' the further end of the field where the children (and adults!) had plenty of space to run, play and burn off any remaining energy at the end of the day, without disturbing other campers.
If you are looking for a small, friendly, English-run camp site in this area, you can't go wrong with Pinabres.
This site is fantastic! it is very reasonably priced and has a nice atmosphere the facilities are immaculate with powerful showers and hot running water and there was never any queuing for facilities at the site. the owners are super friendly and always welcoming there is no litter and enough water points. The bins are a short walk down the road, there is a intermarche a short drive away, bear in mind that this closes for lunch. The site also has some badminton equipment. Overall this is a great site and you would be foolish not to stay there.

Stayed at Pinabre in August 2014 and loved it. We cant add much about the site than the other reviewers have already said.
Its a clean, quiet and a well run camp site. We were met by Ralf and he was very welcoming, gave us all the information we needed about the local shops and supermarket (five minutes away in a car or twenty minutes away if you want to walk through quiet country lanes).
There is lots of space and you certainly feel that you are well and truly in the country side. I suppose the best recommendation we can make is that if we are in that area again we would defiantly stay there. Pinabre is certainly worth five stars.
Pinàbre Brittanys Best
My husband and I had been travelling in France and arranged to meet up with friends for our last week. Our friends had chosen this camp site. When we arrived we were met by Ralf the owner, who gave us a very warm welcome. We were all overjoyed with the site as it gave the impression that we were guests of Ralf's family, and wew were staying in their very, very large garden. There was a lot of room as only 6 units stay at any one time, and we could pick where we wanted to camp as there were ample electric sockets to allow us to do this.. The electric sockets needed a 'French' adapter, but Ralf had one available at no extra charge for those who needed it. The site had been freshly mown, with pots of flowers, hanging baskets, beds containing shrubs and a very sturdy wooden garden swing that could hold two adults. Ralf and his wife Ann were readily available to answer any questions on inquiries about trips out etc. And would make a point on checking if everything was ok. The 2 showers were excellent, each had a basin, toilet, toilet paper, (often not supplied in France) soap, hand towel and a microfibre mop and cleaning cloth. The actual shower was spacious and you had a choice as to weather you used the rain shower or the one with a movable shower head. The larger shower room also had a chair, which very helpful for my husband. The showers felt as if they were the families personal showers, not at all like camping showers. The wash-up area was excellent, all very clean, with a cloth and washing up liquid for those who hadn't had chance to buy their own. The use of the washing machine was the cheapest we had had on our 9 week trip to France, at 3 €'s per wash. I would highly recommend this picturesque, quiet site.
This campsite ticks all the right buttons, large enough not to be on top of other users, very clean, modern and spacious washing facilities with constant hot water, friendly and informative owners, nothing was too much trouble at all. The campsite itself is set in a lovely rural part of Brittany offering views over the surrounding countryside, plenty of walks for the energetic or just stroll 100yds down to the river and relax with the horses and fishermen. Cycle into the town of Plouguenast for the early morning baguette or along quiet roads to the nearby villages, all offering their own taste of French living. Major towns such as Vannes or Saint-Brieuc are within easy reach by car for those who want a bit of cafe culture or a day by the sea. Vannes in particular has a large natural bay with tiny islands serviced by ferries. Dinan with its medival centre is well worth a days visit. Closer villages like Loudeac and Moncontour have an array of restaurants and bars, all within easy reach from the campsite. Overall this is a great campsite with very friendly and helpful owners, will return one day.
