La Prairie

Europe France Aquitaine Gironde

A tranquil campsite on the Atlantic Coast with all-weather watersports and cycling action to enjoy

Aire naturelle campsites appeal to anyone who rates personal space above fancy amenities and organised fun. Typically found in attractive back gardens of French family homes, only 25 pitches are permitted and they’re spacious. To find a peaceful, unspoilt aire naturelle site so near to beaches and lakes is as good as it gets for nature- loving campers en France.

Welcome to the home of affable hostess Aude Libante. Her garden is a pretty, asymetric field with a few trees at each end and a couple of barns in between. When the weather is so hot that only sea breezes will keep you from melting, the coast is just 3 miles (5 km) away. And when the Atlantic currents are too strong to swim in, you’re on the middle edge of the biggest natural lake in France, Lac d’Hourtin-Carcans. Hourtin beach, to the north, is a family favourite and further south lies Lac de Lacanau, famous for international surfing competitions every August. White, sandy beaches and still waters offer supervised swimming and water sports. The nearest is Maubuisson; turn right out of the campsite and follow the signs and you’ll be windsurfing in minutes.

Good, simple camping!

We were welcomed by Aude, the softly spoken and wonderfully helpful owner and given a lovely pitch; nicely shaded and flat. The site is small with pretty good facilities- the showers are hot and powerful! Location wise, the site is excellent- close to beaches with amazing surf, the cycle network and the lake- yet it is quiet and removed. Aude arranged bike hire for us but if you can bring bikes, bring them as the cycle network is excellent. The only negative would be minor- smallish pitches all quite close together....but as we met some lovely people, that wasn't a problem this time round :)

Great location

This is a little gem of a campsite, the pitch was perfect, sunny and shaded. We also had electricity (which was great for our tent). Aude the campsite owner is a lovely person and was incredibally helpful. Aude arranged bikes for us to rent for the day, you can have longer if needed, also Aude booked a lovely restaurant for us which we cycled to as there is a very good cycle path network around the area. You can order fresh crossaints, bread, and pain aux raisins each morning which are delivered to the campsite from the local bakery, this must be on your list of things to do! We will most definitely return given the next opportunity.
