Full RV hookups
Electrical, water, and sewage hookups are available at select sites.
One of the friendliest sites in the south. The hosts are delightful, the views stunning, and there’s bags for you and the kids to do.

Natalie and Patrick McAlpine, the owners of Domaine des Mathevies on the outskirts of medieval Sarlat-la-Canéda, first met in India. Their subsequent travels brought them to this neglected campsite and they set about transforming it into the eco-minded sanctuary it is today. A labour of love, it’s a place where adults are as well catered for and contented as their kids – where you can sit back with a frothy latté, play pétanque over a leisurely glass of St-Émilion as a paraglider is swallowed up by the salmon-pink sunset below.

Set on a gentle incline with masterful views over the wooded valley, there are 40 pitches to choose from, many of which enjoy shade from walnut, cherry, fig, apple and plum trees, and all of which have electricity hook-ups. If you’re arriving late and don’t fancy pitching up for the night, there are four spanking new cabins from which to savour the best views over the hills, plus seven more well-furnished cabins dotted around the edge of the site.

Beside the Cosy Nook Café there’s also a self- contained traditional gîte with all mod cons (Sky TV and a CD player) within its exposed stone walls and beamed ceilings. Perfectly sized for a family, with two double bedrooms, it’s recently been refurbished and is partnered by another, Le Point de Vue, a mere two minutes’ walk away. Both have two good sized bedrooms and Le Point de Vue boasts a self-contained, fully-furnished guest wing. The real ace, though, is the spectacular sunset view you can enjoy, and the privacy the place affords; giving you all the amenities plus the chance to retire to your own little palace.

The site itself is a real playground for kids, with a toddlers’ play area near the Cosy Nook Café (so you get to relax with them in plain view). Natalie and Patrick have two kids and it’s this empathy with the little ones that seems to have led to so many thoughtful details to keep them happy. There’s an excellent sand pit for younger kids and a terrific climbing area, but if that’s not enough to keep them occupied there’s a children’s pool as well as a larger swimming pool for adults, as well as tennis courts and a table-tennis table.

The Cosy Nook Café lives up to its moniker with swallow-you-up couches, a cosy ‘daybed’ for reclining on, honey stone walls and delicious bar snacks that together make it one of the most inviting campsite cafés in France. Fresh bread and croissants are delivered every morning; the best spot to take breakfast is under the shade of the linden trees. And just in case you sneaked your computer in with you, the Nook has Wi-Fi as well as satellite TV for movies or sport in the evening. With the gastronomical Mecca of Sarlat close by, coupled with what is one of the Dordogne’s friendliest, most charming sites, you may well find yourself staying much longer than planned.

We absolutely loved our stay at Domaines des Mathevies. The owners were so friendly but with a light touch approach, the pizzas were delicious and the campsite had a lovely laid back, friendly feel to it. The pool was an added bonus to cool off after a hot and hilly cycle back from the local market in Sarlat and the facilities were always spotlessly clean. Would definitely return.

The site was very family friendly- maybe to the exclusion of other campers? E.g. it wasn't possible to swim a length of the pool without being dive bombed! The food trucks were a bonus and we managed to get out on our bikes to explore the beautiful surroundings. The main host was friendly as were the other campers - mainly english and Dutch. Good luck with it all after what must have been a tricky few years

We really enjoyed our 4 night stay at the campsite. We definitely could have stayed far longer as there was loads to do in the area. The campsite is beautiful. Each pitch allows you to have your own private space, with trees and plants bordering each plot. The view from our pitch was lovely. The reception area with chilled out bar was lovely, catered for children well, and we really appreciated the daily food vans which each had good vegetarian options. The shower block was exceptionally clean. Some really good running routes from the campsite down to the river and around the villages. Thank you for our stay!

Just spent 2 nights at this delightful site on my way to Spain. Will go out of my way to stay on the way back. Beautiful area, characterful pitches, owners go out of their way to be helpful but above all spotlessly clean facilities. So pleasant. Thank you Patrick and Natalie.

From the host
Small is Beautiful - Camping as if People Matter There's something for everyone at Mathevies, elevated above the Dordogne valley among its green rolling hills and meandering river. Our ethos is based on the philosophy “Small is beautiful” by E.F. Schumacher with the central message ‘Camping as if people matter’. For the Mathevies team that means providing a holiday where people come first in a tranquil, family friendly environment, lively enough to be convivial but small enough for everyone to matter. Now more than ever, holiday makers crave to be outdoors! The sun on one’s back, a soft evening breeze, the life affirming beauty of the Dordogne. It’s here waiting. Mathevies camping pitches are spacious and positioned to make sure nobody feels crowded together. Situated in a beautiful area of South-West France, on the top of a hill the site is surrounded by forest and rolling farmland. While the Cosy Nook, the intimate focal point of Mathevies sparkles with laughter and cameraderie as new friends are made. A step outside will find you experiencing the quiet of a day in the Dordogne with nothing to disturb the view except perhaps a Falcon circling its prey in a cloudless sky. Guests can relax. We will take care of the rest. When you book your holiday, you will receive a handy Welcome Pack taking you throgh the practicalities of life on site and tips off site allowing you to plan like never before. We look forward to welcoming you to our human scale campsite in the heart of the Dordogne valley.

Location, Location, Location.

Domaine des Mathevies, is a peaceful hamlet in the coveted village Sainte Nathalene, which in itself supports the medieval town of Sarlat - the historical centre point of the Dordogne Valley.

From our vantage point you are within easy reach of the Dordogne's key landmark's. Sarlat for its gastronomic restaurants and markets. Beynac, Castelnaud, Domme and La Roque Cageac for the famous fortressed castles of the 100 years war. Lascaux and Les Eyzes for their world-famous cave paintings and glimpse into prehistory. And not forgetting the magnificent river Dordogne itself for its nature, swimming and canoeing.

Food and drink

Visit our rolling kitchens..

No need to cook! Our selection of visiting food trucks will provide you with delicious cuisine to meet all tastes….

In the evenings in July & August the food trucks serve up freshly cooked & locally sourced meals to tempt your taste buds.

On the menu this summer: galettes & crepes, wood-fired pizza, Vietnamese, fish ‘n chips & gourmet burgers to name a few.

Vegetarian & vegan options are always available as are family-friendly kid’s portions.

To minimise waste, bring up your own plates & cutlery and grab a seat on the terrace.

Order your drinks from the Cosy Nook bar.

If you prefer to eat ‘at home’ then simply take your dinner back to your pitch or chalet and enjoy a hassle-free evening.

If there is enough demand in early June and September then our caterers will happily extend into the shoulder season too…

Stay tuned for this summer’s lineup!

Nearby Sarlat takes its cuisine very seriously and its winding streets are full of restaurants and bistros. For something different, Chez le Gaulois, tucked away in the centre of the old town, serves rustic platters of cheeses and charcuterie, boiled potatoes, salads and melted raclette. Service is great and the atmosphere superb. It’s small and popular so booking is advisable. There’s also Delpeyrat a family favourite in Carsac – a traditional French dining room, producing homemade delights. Out of town, try the Pech-de-Malet in Vitrac, a family owned restaurant with fabulous terrace and views across the valley (ideal for kids).
