Eco Camping Glavotok

1 acre hosted by Camping G.
Croatian hospitality is generallywelcoming and here it is as polite and as friendlyas you could wish for
When the campsite lights are switched off at 11pm, it’ll feel like you’re in Dalmatian heaven. All you’ll hear are the waves softly crashing against the grey stone sea walls of Krk island. All you’ll see are the twinkling lights on the island of Cres and the denser illuminations of Rijeka city on the mainland.

It hasn’t always been so peaceful in Croatia. Various wars have affected the country’s economy, and throughout history numerous countries have jostled for a piece of this Adriatic jewel. Victims of the 1991–2001 Yugoslav Wars (including the civil war that overthrew communism) and the 1999 NATO bombing of Serbia, are countrymen who have had to fight long and hard to reclaim their ancestor’s land.

Camp Glavotok’s owner Sanjin Barbalic is one such man. It took him seven years, with the help of lawyers, to win back his campsite. Now back in the family, the restaurant is watched over by a portrait of great uncle Dr Anton Milohnic, accused of being a spy and shot on this spot in 1945.

Sanjin’s 12-year operation is a model Croatian campsite, and don’t people know it. The best views, seen from pitches 263–280 and 327–334, are usually booked a year in advance. To bag one of these spots, aim for a June or late-August visit, otherwise make do with one of the woodland pitches, a good way of shielding you from the growing number of mobile homes. Many of them, though, are set-up by the campsite itself; completely furnished statics or family bungalows with the appearance of traditional coastal houses. The main comfort, over and above the kitchen, sofas and TVs is surely the air-conditioning – definitely a bonus in this neck of woods.

More like minded souls who go for the pitch up and peg down option can cool down in other ways. Jump off the jetty, enroll in diving classes and swim your heart out. At night ask for extra ice in your cocktail while you laze at the beach-front bar or head back into the trees for a quiet evening in. It’s just you, your book and the softly crashing waves.
