A vintage Volkswagen split-screen campervan with a pick-up point in Cardigan Bay.

Thelma looks right at home in a cardigan. Sorry — that should be “in Cardigan” or, to use it’s Welsh name: Ceridigion. After all we’re not talking about an old lady in knitwear but a vintage van that’s available to hire from Cardigan Bay on the west coast of Wales. Personified as Thelma by her owner, this Volkswagen T2 splitscreen is actually a bit of an old lady as she was manufactured back in 1964, not that you’d know it to look at her.

A new paint job and a complete re-build means that this old lady of a van is about as good as it gets. She’s fitted and kitted out for adventures on the open road and can go wherever you want to take her — but with a pick-up point in seaside Aberporth at the very south of Cardigan Bay, there’s one route that begs to be explored; the 60 miles of coast stretching north from here.

Cardigan Bay is the largest bay in Wales, a huge indent in the coastline looking out to the Irish Sea. With beautiful beaches and seaside resorts with opportunities for surfing and dolphin watching along its length it’s a fantastic place for a holiday. Swapping your car (or your journey by public transport) for vintage wheels at its most southern spot seems a great way to start an adventure here. There are plenty of campsites to park up on your journey and the slower pace demanded by Thelma is just right for cruising this coastline. As we said at the start, Thelma looks right at home in Cardigan. But then again, she’d look good anywhere.

The Owner Says

A stunning 1964 VW T2 split screen (Thelma) is located 150 yards from the stunning west Wales coast. She is an old girl, but been resprayed and rebuilt, you may possibly get to 60mph but that’s why she’s perfect to enjoy the stunning coast line. 15 mile from the very popular town of Newquay with boat trips to see the dolphins in cardigan bay. 38 mile from Tenby and 50 mile from the historic town of Pembroke with its stunning castle. The ideal vehicle to explore this stunning coast. Within 50 miles you have folly farm, Oakwood, Heatherton and bluestone to name a few days out. I would start listing beaches but there’s far too many. Within 10 miles of us are Llangranog, Mwnt, Poppit, Tresaith, Penbryn and Cwmtudu. All of which are never far from a campsite. There is a tv, diesel heater, fridge, electric hook up and plenty of storage. Being so old there may be a few imperfections but that’s what make her perfect. The beaches pictured are Aberporth where it’s collected, tresaith within 1 mile, mwnt 4 miles and Newquay 15 miles, and the final 2 are penbryn 3 miles away.
