Sunny-hued vintage VW vans for cruising around Sussex and the south coast

With a name like Summer Breeze Campers, the mind conjures a vision of sunny days cruising the coast in a vintage VW. While we can’t guarantee the weather, we can recommend Summer Breeze Campers for supplying the other elements of this campervanning dream. And, anyway, if the sun doesn’t make an appearance during your holiday, every day will be brightened by the sunny hue of the vintage vans in this company’s fleet.

Based in the Sussex village of Ashurst, it’s just nine miles which separates the pick-up point from the South Coast at Shoreham – where sunshine is as likely as anywhere in the UK. From here, cruising along the coast to seaside destinations is easy; west to Worthing and the Witterings or east to Brighton, Beachy Head and Hastings. There are equally lovely destinations inland too; Ashurst sits just outside the South Downs National Park and in the heart of English wine country.

Summer Breeze Campers are vintage vehicles which need to be treated with care and driven slowly; better for smaller adventures than epic journeys. It’s fortunate then, that they’re available to hire from a part of the UK with so much to see and a wealth of great campsites.

Awesome!

Rented Saffron for a few days. Lovely experience & a proper adventure around South Downs. Krystyna was super helpful and accommodating (we forgot our bedding and she kindly lent us some). Everything was well organised and punctual. Saffron is in great condition and has everything you’ll need for a campervan adventure: We’ll be back again :)

Life in the slow lane...in a good way-)

We hired Izzy for 5 nights and had a fabulous experience in her. She is proper retro! Original inside still, quirky and great fun. You will get loads of admirers and feel instantly famous in her! Be ready to build up your muscles if you are driving - with no power steering she takes a fair bit of muscle power to get her around in tight spots, but it is really all part of the fun. She is very reliable, starting up every time first time, whatever the weather - we had a couple of damp mornings. Highlight was the cooker. Able to cook up anything from a 5 piece cooked breakfast whilst keeping everything hot, to simply boiling your water for a cuppa in the morning. And the beauty of being able to swing the cooker out so you had more room inside. The owners have provided some handy accessories which made a difference - sharp knives, sounds simple but so many times we go away to places and the knives are nearly blunt. Collapsible sink - made it easier to carry dishes and get them washed at campsites. Mattress topper - provided a little more comfort for sleeping. We hired the awning, which was brilliant when staying anywhere for 2 nights or more. Gave just some more space, and somewhere to sit in the evening when the weather wasn’t quite what we were hoping for in August, but still felt like nearly outside! Relatively easy to put up, the owners have simplified it by putting on colored sticky dots to the poles so you know what goes where for the frame. Hardest part was putting the pegs in, but that was more about the type of pitch we were on than the pegs! The pop up roof was great - being able to stand up in Izzy was super, and gave a real sense of more space. Easy to operate. Thoroughly recommend hiring her out

Childhood Dream

We hired Hugo (we love and miss you Hugo!) for three nights and immediately we all fell in love! Hugo is an absolutely gorgeous slice of history and the experience was magic. We made wonderful family memories that we will all cherish forever. Our four year old son struggled to part with Hugo (so did I!) upon our return. We enjoyed the experience of staying on Blakes' Farm for the first night and our young son was amused and entertained by the goats and other animals visible from the camping zone. We also spent quality family time playing games that I had not seen for many years! The facilities were well thought out with a covered eating and cooking area as well as a shaded seating and fire pit area. The views were very pretty and the warm outdoor shower is an experience not to be missed! Krystyna and Bruce were very accommodating from start to finish and even made sure to call us back immediately when we had a technical question to ask. Hugo was a pleasure to drive and definitely a conversation starter as we drove around! It was great to experience what driving was like in 1978! The interior fridge, cooker, sink, split roof and bed were easy to use and comfortable to sleep on. Hugo was well maintained and well equipped including charging points for mod cons and internal lights. If this has been something you have wanted to do you will not be disappointed!

Cosy camper with a sunny disposition

My family booked Saffron for a surprise glamping weekend to mark my 60th. Easy to drive and easy on the eye she gets honks of approval and appreciative waves wherever she goes - it's like you've secretly joined the classic car club. Inside is immaculate with a retro look mixed with modern comforts like 2-ring hob, sink with running water, phone chargers and bluetooth audio. It is deceptively roomy for a family of four by day, quickly converting into a cosy bedroom for 2 by night. The pop up side tent slept our 2 grown up kids comfortably and was really quick and easy to put up. Thanks too to Krystyna for her excellent communication, help and advice pre- and post-booking. All in all great fun.

An adventure to remember in Izzy!

We had the best time taking Izzy away on a tour of the south, the weather was spectacular & Izzy was fantastic. She has all the charms of the 1970s camper with some added mod cons which made hiring her an absolute pleasure. The bed was incredibly comfy (Krystyna supplied the van with a mattress topper which was greatly appreciated), the hobs swivel out so you can cook without losing precious space in the van & the electric hook up means that you can charge various things without worrying about draining any batteries (there is also a solar panel). Once the (beautifully retro) pop top is up you've got more than enough space to strand & all in all its surprisingly roomy. Izzy attracts a lot of admirers at any campsite, you'll find yourself waving to any other VW vans you come across, she has so much character & we will definitely be taking her out again. Renting from Krystyna & Bruce was a pleasure, they made sure we knew everything we needed to about the van, from how to assemble the bed - to putting the pop top up. The van was also supplied with anything you could need for a few days away, we rented the retro driveaway tent and it was perfect for allowing us to take day trips away from the sites without lugging any camping kit around. Relatively simple to put up & no leaks even when we had torrential rain on the last night. The engine has clearly been kept in good condition, we had no issues over the 7 days we hired her & it was a pleasure to dive! Would definitely recommend Summer Breeze to anyone looking for a an authentic VW Hire experience. 10/10 we'll be renting again!

Wonderful trip in Saffron!

Everything about our experience with Summer Breeze campers was great, from the contact with Krystyna before, our trip away and handover at the end. We had 3 nights in the gorgeous Saffron, she was a dream to drive and I couldn’t stop smiling for the whole journey! The kids absolutely loved it, she is really well kitted out and very comfortable to sleep in. We will definitely be hiring her again! Thanks so much Krystyna!

Amazing memories!!!

I rented Hugo as a surprise getaway for my wife and 2 boys birthdays (all at 3 days difference) just as lockdown 3.0 allowed us to do so. I grew up in the late 70’s with 3 of these in our family farm. It was a delight to finally be behind the wheel of one of them (and really drive!) Hugo is in tip-top condition and the amenities built in are great. Fridge and sink, all the kitchen cooking ware, a double gas hob that swivels out (no nasty smell after a proper fry up!), a small heater, several plugs and USB port for when you are hooked up, a good stereo with cd and games!!! He is a real head turner and the camaraderie with other VW camper owners or other vintage cars added to the magic created! We hired the drive away pod, so we could leave all our gear in the pod and explore the South Downs. Krystyna and Bruce have an amazing site and I think next time (oh yes definitely!), we might just stay at theirs. They are so lovely and helpful, you are not renting from a business, you borrow one of their family member for a small fee! As it was still very cold for our 3 nights and our boys & us are very small, we squeezed in all on the roll top bed and left the tent in the pod to look after our clothes. Nevertheless I wouldn’t recommend to try it depending on your kids night routine...😩 Can’t recommend Hugo enough, although they have 1 more Izzy (even more original features with original wood built in furniture and 2 hammock bed and another in the pipeline, Saffron i believe. Krystyna and Bruce also have glamping on their site with animals and loads of activities. Check it out, book, you won’t be disappointed!
