Anyone who’s popped into a shop in the Lake District or enjoyed a cup of tea in a Cumbrian café will probably recognise the Herdy sheep logo. Created in 2007, Herdy began selling coffee mugs in order to support upland fell farming and rural communities in the local area. Roll on over a decade and they’ve burgeoned into an iconic British brand, found in over 400 retailers around the UK and with an award-winning charitable fund. Since 2020, this distinctly Lake District brand has also teamed up with camping aficionados Martyn and Sara Merckel to offer Herdy Campervans: Fun-filled VWs that allow you to enjoy the classic Lake District countryside whilst also giving something back.
Sara and Martyn have heaps of experience in the camping sector, having run one of the Lake District’s most successful campsites for years and hosted the popular Eskdale Dub Fest for like-minded VW campervan enthusiasts. Today their knowledge of the area and all things camping is brought to Herdy Campervans, which is run from the couple’s home near Kendal, making it ideal for those wanting to explore both the Lakes and the Yorkshire Dales.
Herdy Campervans has three top-of-the-range VWs, each sleeping up to four people, with bespoke interiors and distinctive Herdy paintwork on the outside. The campervans are available to pick-up and drop off on Fridays and Mondays only, meaning you can enjoy a full week away, a mid-week break or a long weekend (seven-day minimum hire during school summer holidays). Two of the campervans have a manual gearbox, while the third is fully automatic. Expect power steering, a DAB digital radio and media navigation system, climatic air conditioning, thermostatically controlled heating, USB charging, LED lighting, a sink, hob, a fridge and freezer and all the basic camping equipment needed for a fun family holiday. And, as this is the Lake District, the Herdy Campervans are fully kitted out for outdoor adventure – think solar panels on the roof and a sturdy rack for your mountain bikes.
If you want to explore the North West, a Herdy Campervan is the campervan designed with the region in mind. And you’ll even get to sip your tea from one of the mugs that started the whole thing off!

Social Distancing Measures
If you're thinking of planning a much-welcomed getaway, please be assured that we'll do our best to follow government guidelines and provide you with a COVID Secure experience.
Given the current climate of uncertainty, we are happy to confirm that any bookings cancelled due to COVID-19, can be refunded in full or moved to alternative dates.
We strongly advise that you plan your Herdy Campervan adventure as far in advance as possible. Given the current challenges facing campsites, and increased demand for ‘staycations’, touring pitches are often in limited supply and many campsites require you to pre-book your pitch. Remember, wild camping is only an option if travelling to Scotland and is illegal in England and Wales.
